Toyo R888's

  Clio 200 Black and White
I'm looking to buy some Toyo R888's for my Trophy to use on track.

I will use the standard 16 inch rims.

What size tyres do I need? Do I use the same 205/45 as I would for the PE2's or should I go for a 195 tyre?

I have heard that the R888's are a little wider than standard tyres, so you need to get a size smaller, is this true? If so, what profile number do I need?

Lastly, I have heard that there are two different rubber compounds available, does anyone have experience with these?

yes, there are 2 different rubber compounds

GG = harder one
SG = softer one

the R888 is a bit wider, i would look for 195...;)

I've heard this discussion that R888's are wider than usual, so you can go with a 195 rather than a 205.

However, wouldn't it still be better to go with the 205? Surely wider means more grip, up to a certain point?

Are there any reasons beyond price that dictate the use of a 195 rather than a 205 R888? I'm using KW V2 coilovers, am I likely to have rubbing issues with the wider (205) tyre?

Lastly, surely a 195/50 has a larger rolling radius than a 205/45, which would mean less acceleration?

I'm looking into this at the moment and I would like to keep to 16's too but would be interesting to see if anyone has run R888's on 16's, what size they had, whether they look like balloons on a 50 profile (pics if poss) and whether they have a larger rolling radius than 205.45's and if there's any increased fouling of bodywork if running on coils.

Get some track wheels.
There is a billion reasons for getting some track wheels.
Cheaper tyres,
Lighter wheels
Faster acceleration
Better cornering
The list goes on and on and on.

And then if your names billy and you have no mates you can do this :)

It's alright if you live in a house or have a garage. I live in a 3rd floor apartment and don't much fancy a pile of dirty wheels in my spare bedroom nor dragging them up and down 3 flights of stairs whenever I swap them ;)

Hmmmm well i suppose if you dont have the space then another set of wheels is'nt practial for you.
I did a trackday with my normal 182 wheels with normal road tyres.
Then i did bedford with OZ F1's with R888's and i was SOOOOOO much faster

Great tyres :)

Toyo r888 195/50 16.
They do fit you can use them every day and they are much better in the wet than you would think. They are bigger you can't go to low with the suspension.
even on the stock suspension you may have to modify the wheelarch liners.
They all so flick up more stones as they are soft+sticky .

Here's mine on 195/50R16 A048s. They are much wider than std 195 tyres. Two sets of 4 wheels stacked next to each other both with 195 tyres, the A048s are about 3-4" taller.

Had to remove the front arch liner to be safe as clearance was about 2mm. I haven't had them on track yet but personally I reckon I'll try some 15" wheels for my next track day tyres as they are a snug fit!

Turkish, have you considered rolling on 15s 24/7? I have but, I'd have to lower it some

My bean is having a mid-life crisis. I don't know what to do with it. Keep it as a road/track car, keep it but only as a track car + a new car. Get shot etc. etc.

Ideally I'd want to stick with the 16's and be able to drop it some but it looks like due to the extra width and balloon height sidewalls that wont happen. Undecided now if they did a 195.45 or 195.40 in 888's, a048's etc I'd give it a shot. I'd ruled out the 888's but having spoken to a few people I know who run them on dailys they say they aren't widowmakers unless you're driving like a tool when there's standing water.

Hankook RS2's are the cheapest option for 16's. They are also a very good tyre. Both on road and track.

Await's JonR's comment.

I'm running these as 888's in 17 are outragous.

2 yrs ago when i was running 888's they were the new thing, i believe there are as good if not better tyres that get overlooked.
Hence my choice of Hankook Rs2's, very very good.

Ive got 15s on with paradas and its a good compromise between looks+ handling.

Anything other than dry look out for ditches :quiet:

You need Inferno or Jon R to answer that as i've only done 600/700 miles so far.
Took a good few miles to get the glaze off the tyres but now things are fine.
Like with all track/road tyres there are compromises as in ride is lot firmer due to very stiff side walls & road noise is slightly more, worse with 888's.

These are the Hankooks;

I've got nothing but praise for the RS2's. I've tried Exalto's and Kumho V70A's previously.

The RS2's are most similar to the Exalto's, but they have a higher level of grip and I found that they did not degrade in the same way after a day of abuse at Brands, the side walls feel significantly stiffer too. They also come with a decent amount of tread to start with (unlike the V70A's - 4mm iirc).

I've got to say that the V70A's were by far the tyre with the most traction (I had medium compound front and soft rear), but they were very sensitive to pressures and lost air on a weekly basis too. On the road, they are not my choice - they were scary in standing water even when new due to the low tread level. Unless they half in price, I wouldn't buy them again - to sum up, they were good, but required looking after.

Since fitting the RS2's I've driven the car in standing water and found it to be absolutely fine, although I don't have the same level of confidence in these conditions as I did with the Exalto's. Saying that, leaning on them a little hasn't casued any dramas and I definitely don't have to tip-toe around corners.

In the dry the RS2's have more outright grip than the Exalto's and they break away nice and progressively even when they are past their best. Turn in at Brands was sharp and positive. I'll think they're great to be fair. Don't tell the tyre companies, but I think they're worth more than the asking price!

  182 Cup
I'm on standard 182 cup wheels, so 7x16. I went for 205/45/16's and they were around £76 a corner if my memory serves me right.

I think when I was looking there were only two suppliers in the UK - camskill and another, but I can't for the life of me remember who else. Sorry.

Ok 6 weeks for stock according to the sales team @ camskill & the 205/45/R16 are only £65 a corner + delivery!

Inferno whats the fit like on the 205's? Some manufactures' 195 is more like a 205, Toyo for instance, is the 205 Hankook a good fit?

  182 Cup
They cover the edge of the rim, which is more than the V70A's did! This pic should show the coverage. I'll get a better one later if you need it.

Ok thanks mate!

I have been offered a new set of Khumo V700s for £150 - probably worth it until the RS2 come into stock....
