TPT's view on the 197..

I posted this on the Renaultsport site, but as some of you aren't members I've added my thoughts on here too.

"Went down to Sewards in Portsmouth, just to see whether they had the new 197 and pick up a brochure. They had two, one in red, which was sat in the showroom and then an albi blue 197 as a demonstrator.

Anyway took it the demo out for a test drive, probably for around three quarters of an hour - bloody awful test drive. Not down to the car though, the torrential rain - five car pile up on the M27, then flooded roads over Portsdown hill (part of the Southdowns).

As for my imprssions:

- Build quality - very good, VW standard easily. Seats were excellent and very supportive.

- Engine, admittedly was very tight (the car only had 250 miles on the clock), sounded nice when revved past 4k rpm, but sadly seemed quite flat and no way as punchy as the 182.

- Handling - as the weather was attrocious didn't really get to work on this, apart from on the way back to the dealership when the rain had eased up. This coped on a tight bend impeccably.
On a negative point I felt the steering was very light, too light, to be honest.

Have to admit it, though I didn't sit in the car and say, yes I want one. Which is something I did when I first drove the 182. In fact when I got back into my 182 and drove off, it felt so much hardcore and more of a drivers car. Another negative point of the car was the price, the demo I drove was up at £17,200!!!! - Far too expensive, Renault if you're listening don't do an MG Rover and overprice your cars. This car should be around the 14k mark, with some of the optional equipment as standard.

Anyway, I have another test drive booked for this Thursday, when hopefully the roads will be dryer, this will give me a proper opportunity in driving the car how it should be driven.
I'll let you all know how this goes."

Felt EXACTLY like that for me too, in fact it was nice driving home in it :)

I have read many reviews on the 197, some from other CS members and others in car magazines. It generally 'appears' that Renault have really messed up this time. It seems it really is not worth anywhere near what they are asking for it and is a general disapointment to those who were just dying to test it out. The main two points I keep reading about are it's so-called lack of 'umph' compared to the 182 and the extremely light steering. Personally speaking, I like to feel that my car is well and truely in contact with the road instead of 'appearing' to hover above it. As for the so called lack of power, it may well be that the engine is obviously abit tight and needs to bed-in abit before you find out what its true potential is. It would be interesting to find out what power reviews there would be on one that had done about 2-3k. May it well be a different story then? ~Shrugs~

Imo it's pretty pointless going on about the engine, why not wait untill it's done a few thousand miles, then see what it's like.

Well thats what i'm going to do anyway, oh and good review TPT.

I thing renault are been a wee bit cheeky with the 197, they are banking on the old reputation of the 182 to create a "must have" aura around the 197. IMO you must be properly insane to buy a 197 for 17k its just utterly overpriced when you think you can pick a trophy up for 11k or a brand new meg 225 for 15. Totally agree with TTP its a 14k car at the dealers and a 12.5/13k import. Imagine what the depreciations gonna be like if your daft enough to have bought one for 17k!! try 6 or 7k in a year!

I seem to recall the 182 when it first came out was over £16k. Give it a few months and we will see how many people come on saying i got a 197 for £11k.

I was thinking the same until I drove it. In terms of steering feel, it's light years ahead of a CTR, for example, and it actually feels better than the 182 purerly because its wheel is a realistic size. Granted, it lacks the 182s feedback, but it really isnt so bad as to distract from the overall feel of the chassis.

The 197 truly is a superb drive. It doesnt feel as though it "hovers" at all. Far from it. It is planted. The ride is firm but also very composed. It turns in better than a 182 and it corners flatter. It feels every bit the hot hatch. The engine is also a lot nicer than the 182 and revs far smoother...almost to the point where it rivals the CTR motor (almost) and the 'box is a thing of delight.

It's a superb car. The only question mark for me is that it doesnt feel quite as urgent in performance terms as my 182, but that may pass as the engine runs in. In every other way, the 197 is far superior to the 182, and if there were no financial questions, I'd have the former all day long over the latter.

See and drive the 197 before making final judgement - it might just surprise you.

I don't like it purely on looks . Even if it does turn out to be a better car than the 182 in terms of handling , it doesn't stand out from the crowd imo , it looks dull and boring .Plus i hate cars with light steering .

When I saw the car in the flesh - I thought "looks much better in the flesh", but and I am afraid to say it doesn't look as good as a 172/182, although those front arches looked almost as big as a V6's, but you're right billy, doesn't stand out, especially for the money that Renault are asking for it.

Roy, you're a fellow 182 Cup owner - so we're in a minority, but mate the 197 was far too sanitised.

Not in my view at all mate. I think it's a superb drive. It feels better to sit in. It handles better. It looks better (IMO)

It's just....nice. Everything about it oozes quality compared to the 182Cup. I will definately be considering one, or a Cup, in a few weeks or months. If I havent already bought a Meg by then for less money :clown:
