Track Tyre Softener - worth it for old tyres?

I've just been out on a set of Dunlop D01J's that haven't seen tarmac for at least 8-9 months.

I was running pressures too high (30 psi), they're only 195's (normally I run 205 track tyres), and I obviously couldn't get any serious heat into them on public roads...but I was surprised at how mobile the rear was.

Would they be past their best having been sat idle for so long?

Would applying a tyre softener be a good idea before I go on track?
