I would say - due to the registration date of your 172 - that you dont in fact have traction control.
The traction control system fitting to later model 172s and to 182s etc is activated everytime you start the car, and to disable it you have to push a button which is down on the right hand side of the steering wheel next to the thumb wheel which changes the level of the dash lights etc, if you dont have this AND you can wheel spin the car then you dont have traction control.
(Some Dutch imports did have traction control but no button, but they were constantly on, and you would have noticed if the car had it in that case)
As Roamer says, on the panel above the cubby hole should be 3 (or on yours could just be one) as the other 2 are TC/ESP and Cruise control. If you only have one its going to be the dash light adjustment
As a matter of interest, whats the traction control system like on the 172/182s?? The system on my HGT is useless! I can spin the wheels and ill get the TC light up on the dash telling me im doing so, but it wont stop it for ages! Whereas in my mates ibiza cupra, the slightest tyre slip causes power to be cut. Its arguably too safe
