Traction Control

  Ziel Nurburgring

Whilst raping the car about yesterday i noticed that when you get a bit of wheel spin that the ESP light flashes. Didnt have the ESP switched on and was wondering if the system automatically retards(heh heh) the wheel spin in 1st and 2nd (Like most TC)

When you say you didnt have it switched on, do you mean you switched it off, as it will always be on unless you turn it off by pushing the button.

I thought that truning the ESP off turned the traction controll off as well, as there are some instances when it needs to be off. (I read something somewhere about not having it on it certain snowy conditions)

If you switch it off, its all off. I always have to make a point of remembering to switch it off before running a quarter mile.

Hang on, if the dash light is off, then its off right? Its doesnt automatically switch itself on does it?

Wrong way round mate. When you start the car its on by default. If you switch it off then the dash light is on permanently.

when you start the car the light is OFF, but traction control is ON. You will notice the light flashing every time traction control kicks in.

If you press the button the light will turn ON and traction control will be OFF.

Traction control is enabled every time the car is started, so the button needs to be pressed to turn it off

What a dump french system, like the backward wipers. So i need to hit the button to turn it off, i cant believe that! Shows that i havent needed the TC and it doesnt interfere very much

Its the same in all cars Ive driven with ESP/TC.

Its amazing how good it is on the Clio. On my old Focus it was hindering/helping all the time. In the Clio it rarely comes on unless you are wheelspinning heavily or seriously sideways.

Yep, just think about your ABS light...if its on something is wrong and ABS is not engaged, if its off your ABS is working....same with ESP

Not a very bright idea if what BenR was saying is true..

disabeling the ABS causes the brake bias to be split 50/50.

Also, cant see from the pictures, but it looks like he has taken the 10amp fuse out completely too, again not a very wise idea.. the fuse is there for a reason..

So theres me switching it off in the wet and thinking i can throw it in a bit harder....Lucky to be here then!

I think that was with refernce to installing rear disk brakes/ and the ABS.

As long as the ABS is left alone ie you dont pull the fuse on it it should (this is Renault were talking about) be fine.

EDD
lol .. did you even look at the link.. the switch is wired directly into the fusebox, all the switch does is replace the fuse with a switch so that when the switch is on it thinks there is a fuse in the fusebox.

Hence you ARE effectivly pulling the fuse hence you will get 50/50 distribution.

disabling abs is a bad idea surely and you would get 50/50 split braking on a modern abs system.

esp and traction control are turned off togethor, permanatly lit esp light means its switched off.when it flashes it means esp is activating(ie-cornering hard so causing vehicle to skid).esp/traction control automatically switches itself on every the vehicle is started.

the reason for the off button is to be able to switch the system off in say snowing conditions otherewise the traction control would be cutting engine torque etc all the time to stop the wheels spinning and you wouldnt be able to set off.the system would try to stop the wheel spin which it would be impossible for it to do because of the large lack of traction caused by the snow.hope that made sense.

when the lights flashes its T/C. esp doesnt make the light flash. Ive investigated this extensilvley on my local bypass road ;) Ive made it c**k up a few times too. Not sure exactly how to get it to do it but you can come out of a bend and floor it and the esp cuts ALL the power so its revving like mad but no power is going down at all. Next time its raining Ill investigate abit more and see if I can get it to do it again. Think its sommat to do with oppisite locking and throttling on and off. Maybe my cars just fooked lol
