Transistor question

  1.2 Clio
Ok, i have tapped into the wire which controls my interior light. I have run this into footwell.... i have ground there now and have 12v, fused from battery. I have a transistor down there an npn 2n3904.... but for some reason... unknown to me, when i want the lights on there off and vice versa!!!!! Do need a pnp transistor?? I tried reversing the transistor but it did nothing then!! as i expected. As the interior light has only got a control voltage of 0.11 volts it's a little tricky..

Anyone got any better ideas??? Could recommend a better transistor??? Or even a relay which will work at such minature voltage??? Best of all... anyone have an interior light mount for sale... in this case i will just godge the guts out of that and use the relevant parts ;)

Cheers guys
