i have a 51 plate renault clio with a 1.2 engine, in april i want to give my little 1.2 the life it deserves with a major upgrade putting in a megane 225 turbo engine. ive heard that it should fit with a 197 gearbox.
can someone please help answer my questions and shed a little truth,

will a 225 engine fit the engine bay? obviously if i did i would have to make new mounts.
what gear box could i use that fits?
and can you list anything else that should be change in the process?

oh and i know that people might say why bother but its because i can and cost doesnt come into a car im going to keep.

Engine will fit with some cutting away. As for gearbox err depends could use a VAG 6 speed or 5 speed if you want.

Personaly I'd go stick a 1.8T VAG in it its been done before a few times box is stronger and tunning is easier as bits exist off the shelf.

As for what to chn age a lot of bits depends how good a job you want to do and what power you wqant stock pump won't be enough for the standard 225 though. Still there not expensive realy.

thanks for that post edde, the job will be all hard work with no rushing at all. this is going to be a timely summer job starting from april. i want the engine to be pumping around 400bhp just for start. with all decent gear used, this is a car for keeps that i want to use for meetings/shows but still drive.

Don't use a megane engine if you Want 400bhp.

Yep a few have started not sure if everyone ever did it someone put the internals ina 172 block and used a 172 box though

Forget the Renault then IMO go for a VAG/Saab etc. VAgs been done and go on Audi/VW/Skoda/Seat forums 400hp can be bought offf the shelf. Matt Black off here built a 500hp or wehever it was one years and years ago.

VAG = Volkswagen Audi group

1.8 turbo from golf/passat/a3/a4 etc would be ideal for what you want. That much power won't be cheap though.

Depends how much money you throw at it and reliability, plus the gearbox is the week point and the VAG has the stronger box with more avaliable upgrades avaliable. The 1.8 was used in most Audi/Skoda/Seat/VW range loads of engine codes ie BAM etc. In the Us there pushing big hp from the engine stroked up etc as after a point the bottom ends weekness shows but you can get 800hp I belive.

Depends how much power you want easy option is a 172 engine with a turbo but you could drop a 1.8T with a some light mods from a tt/s3 etc and get the same power with more upgrades avaliable,

maybe worth reading up on here a bit first in the projects thread, there has been a few 172/182 s that had a 225 engine put in them

or speak to RS Tuning as they have done the 197 with a 225 engine iirc
