Trophy dampers

  Turbos.
The magazines talk about the 'race spec' Trophy dampers but exactly how good are they, what's the spec?

I have heard they are a stupid amount of money but it would be interesting to know how good they are compared to the top Koni dampers you can get with the FK Automotive kits.

oops me giving duff info then sorry:

The Trophy suspension is lowered a further 10mm at the front with shorter springs. The dampers are supplied by Sachs Race Engineering and have a unique damping force/velocity curve. Usually used in competition cars, these dampers feature a remote reservoir to accommodate nearly 50% of the oil and gas. This remote reservoir provides three benefits:
  • It liberates enough space to package a thicker, and therefore stiffer damper rod, thus increasing camber compliance
  • The increased oil volume brings better thermal stability, to enable the damper to maintain optimal performance at all times
  • The space liberated allows a better quality for the hydraulic components to enable the damper valving to work more effectively
Another unusual feature of the damper is that a hydraulic bump stop replaces the usual physical elastometric one. This gives a much more progressive stiffness rate once the bump stop starts to work and thus allows a lower ride height without compromising bump travel. The objective of the lower ride height is to improve the turn in and reduce understeer.

Overall these chassis modifications give the Trophy much improved damping control at all speeds, improved traction and reduced body movements (roll and pitch). This is particularly noticeable on poor quality roads.

These dampers are much more expensive than those normally used on road cars and their use will always be restricted to specialist performance cars.

the suspension is very good, my only gripe is that the rear end feels too numb

turn in is amazing, very pointy

Only the fronts have the remote resevoir and despite what looks like a red adjuster on top of it, this seems to be fixed. The damping is very firm, but not harsh - nowhere near race settings. The set-up is good at the front in that it is relatively firm in bump which promotes good turn-in, and the lower ride height lowers the front roll centre, which should reduce terminal understeer a bit - albeit with a nose heavy front wheel drive car there is a limit to how much understeer can be reduced. Interestingly, in theory, leaving the back as it is, i.e relativley high, should be better in terms of balance, even if not so aesthetically pleasing.

I don't find it too pointy, but perhaps that is because it came with only 10' toe-out - even after increasing the camber to 2.00 negative I decided to keep the same toe setting and it is still has the same characteristics. Will experiment with alternatives later.

a salvage yard was auctioning off a crashed trophys suspension on ebay, as well as everything else salvageable from the car. A bit dogdy if you ask me but hey..

So how much are they from Renault?

As much as a slammed look the Trophy seems to get such glowing praise that i'd rather have a better handling car rather that one which can simply generate more grip.

Well supposedly the 52 million from that robbery was found down the road from me, i better go have a look :D

They don't have any spares as of a few months ago they only made enough for the road cars and no spares.
They will be making some though.
