Trophy Handling Problems (tracking?)



Basically I had my tracking done before I went to the 'ring after having my ball joints replaced and newly refurbished dampers fitted.

On the way down to the 'ring a couple of days later, I noticed that the steering seemed overly sensitive on the motorway, as in... if I just tapped the steering wheel ever so slightly to one side, I would be changing lanes. I had to keep correcting it to say in a straight line.

Since then, it seems to have gotten worse. On normal main roads, if there are bumps or even cats eyes, the wheels seem to want to follow the grooves in the road and send my steering wheel loopy! If I drive down a particularly road my steering wheel is going in all directions as the wheels follow the bumps in the road.

I know it shouldn't be like this as none of my other cars have done that, and neither did the Trophy before I had the tracking done.

Has anyone got any ideas? Could the tracking need doing again? It's had new track rods + ends last year, new ball joints this year and the dampers have just been refurbished with new springs.

I fitted some camber bolts to mine yesterday and it now does this, haven't had a chance to get it tracked yet, would that be why?

yes, you will have huge toe out. get it set to 5 mins out each side.

Have you checked your tyre pressures? Worth checking the obvious and cheapest solution first.

I would second this, out of all the cars i have owned RS Clios seem the most sensitive to any kind of pressure drop in the tyres & it is really noticeable through the steering

Thats not the worst I've seen!

@ Jesus, best bet as has been said is get your tracking checked. It sounds likes your car is running too much toe out. If you are doing alot of bumpy B road routes personally I would say set it to slightly less than 5mins in each side. Maybe even try parallel. If you werent so far away I could sort your tracking for you and could find a balance your happy with! Toe is very much a personal preference thing. Trophy's are set for a little bit of negative toe to make them a bit sharper changing direction but grip levels and geo dont change by toeing in a little.
 
Cheers Dan, very helpful. What's the standard setting for Trophys?

I mainly drive it to work and back and do some motorway miles so just want it to feel more sturdy. I do like a good blast now and again so want to retain as much handling as possible too.

I've got 2 degress neg camber on mine Jesus Christ Superstar, However I am running full MF spings and dampers all round.

Yes I had huge toe in also, I'm going for 2 degrees negative camber and some negative toe, what's the standard toe setting on trophys ?
