  Ford F-150 5.4 V8

Roy im not naming anybody!! Its just somethingi often wonder!! Its amazing how everybody who owns a clio whatever KNOWS it is better than a whatever!! It would just surprise me if everybody that does has driven a scooby, evo, M3, Audi S4 FRS,LCR, Mini cooper Meg 225, M6, M5, an other motorway for that matter! sorry ive gone off topic!!

Oh an dave, i dare say ya would lol

Fair play Steve, but remember the price of an RS Clio. Im unsure if youve lived with one, but if you have youll know that you cant go faster for less...which will explain the love of them on here ;)

I dont think theyre the ultimate mate, but I do know nothing can touch them for the money. Handling wise not much can trouble them either. I know there are far better and more rewarding cars out there. My original point, and it wasnt meant to offend, was that I dont think the RS Megane is the car to do it, despite it being a car I love.

The 182’s / trophy’s / etc are quick but once you have driven an M3 CSL with the SMG II sequential gear box down a ‘b’ road you will soon realise the clio would be out of sight within 10 secs.

Totally different league (in terms of price as well) and it’s stupid to compare them the gap IMHO is similar to the gap between a 1.2 8v authentique and a 182

  Clio Cup

Not sure cup tyres in the wet on the csl, 182 might have a chance. Plus csl handle sh*t out of the box, need to get kds done to michelins spec to eliminate some of that vagueness in the steering. Anyway who wants a car that eats £1200 of tyres every 4000 miles or single trackday.

Were dealing with facts not fiction.

Just deal with it, every magazine has cracked one off over the Trophy. Its a Clio, we all own Clios, be happy for Renault.

Cracking comment in Autocar today "Understand the Trophy, and you understand performance cars".

Lol, steady on Lee.

It was a comment on everyone offering opinions on cars which handled the best in the twisties.

Yes you have a nice pink clio with decent suspension, but try and keep the toys in the pram.

Anyways boys,back on topic.

Trophys are now selling for £12500 on the autotrader website. So the price of them is no different to the original cups and 172s when they came out.I do think though a few more may buy this outgoing model and garage it more than the others seen as its the last.

About 3 grand off already.

jonny boy u have to relaise that for 15,ish k the clio is by far the best pound for pound car , if we all had 40 k i think we would have an m3 but for a fun and thrills ride the clio whoops ass end of

Duuur I know. Look I had a 172 so I have no Axe to grind about clios I love them! Ideally I would have liked to have kept my 172 and had the 225 as well but Im not that rich.

The orginal reason this topic went off on a tangent was because Lee said that the Trophy wasnt a mainstream car. Yes the trophy is covered in the man love of all the EVO staff and well done to renault. But the fact remains that it is a normal performance model from the most mainstream of mainstream manufactuers. The Trophy is the hottest hatch of the moment but FFS get over yourselves there are plenty of other cars out there that can keep up with an m3 on B roads.

My other point which seems to have been glossed over is that these days its a benchmark for a hot hatch to be able to give a supercar a good run in the twisties, just because the Trophy was chosen this month by EVO to demonstrate the fact does not mean its the only hot hatch that can do it!

It never ceases to amaze me on cliosport just how relctant people are to comprehend that any car can be better than a clio! Cold hard facts are that the clio in its final form has probably become something to match what the CTR was 4 years ago............

No, dont. I might need to vent again when I get to work tomorrow morning. lol Id been in the garage and Enterprise 2 hours by the time I got in today.

Been quite a good thread so far I reckon. Plenty of opinions and no real arguments.

Key Questions then surely have to be based on;

1. Price-What else could/would you buy, new or used for 13-15.5k that gives as much in terms of performance & performance inclined driver enjoyment

AND if you had 40k same question

2. Comparisons-comapre the lower price bracket and the higher price bracket of your choices in terms of everyday, fast road, and track use and which would you own for all these things when you then add the cost of ownership/fun-bang for buck

3. What does it for you - having the latest, most expensive, fastest (according to the figures) car your friends and family will rate you by OR ignoring what people think, accomodating your practical needs (daily use, space for 3 kids) AND having a light, quick purposeful and enjoyable car that, if your committed and inclined will put to shame many more expensive, capable more expensive cars, and more importantly their drivers, or should I say occupants!

for my part.

nothing beats the RS Clios (Trophy esp but 172, light, 182, cups etc) bang for buck in the lower price band all things considered. In the 40k category for me its down to whether its your toy or your daily drive....DD and its down to seats, toy and its got to be any Porsche new or used (reliability, versatiliy, fitness for purpose etc.)

What does it for me....well bondage actullay....oops sorry wrong forum....! No seriously; light, quick driver orientated cars that I can enjoy arguing the toss over with with like minded individuals.

great thread

Trophy is a wierd one, best example of how i think residuals would work is the Puma/FRP situation.

Id like to see a FRP/Trophy/intergra type R feature in a mag.

Lee.. have you driven a 172cup in anger over a long drive..? just wondring as youd be in a position to give an unbiased view.. as having read the Evo / M6 review i agree that the Trophy is probably pretty special.. as i know how good the cup is on the lanes and pretty quick with it.. id even go to say its quicker than my old WRX with filter, full decat, flaps;), etc.. maybe not so much over a ton of so, but deff before you get to 3 figures..)

Would you say there was THAT much difference or just a bit..?

Ive never had the chance to drive a 172 Cup on track, but I have driven y0z2as Cup (when it was new and standard) over fairly long distances. Essex to home etc. y0z will vouch for how I drove it "wo wo, slow down". lol

Ive said this elsewhere on here, but for me the Trophy and Cup for more alike than say a Trophy and a cup packed 182. Its all in the way they change direction, both cars have a more nimble feel to them. In the 182 it was never a good idea to trouble it with quick changes of direction, it was always better to let it settle a little, the Trophy and the Cup are happy to be flung around. Possibly down to the decrease in unsprung weight.

Id have to drive a 172 Cup on track to really be able to answer it, but comparing the Trophy to my previous 182 it turns in amazingly. Such a pointy front end and a much loser rear. Its certainly easier to get some arse out action should you want it. Over a 172 Cup the ride is a fair bit harder and it corners a lot flatter than any of the others Ive driven.

The other noticeable thing with the Trophy over the 172 Cup is you can turn the wheel plant the throttle and all the power gets onto the tarmac, it doesnt pull around as much or tramline anywhere near as bad. Id imagine the little bit of extra rubber helps with cornering speeds. When I drove the Cup is was on standard sized Yoko A359s.

Renault Birmingham have a 53 plate Cup up for £8,995 at the moment. Holding there value quite well really.

Think that pretty much covers my thoughts on them.
