Turbo 1.2

this is probably a stupid question but is it possible to put a turbo on a petrol engine? i herd they are only for deisels :S.. and also would it be possible to place an aftermarket turbo onto a 51 plate 1.2 dynamique (facelift) ?? or would you have to take it into a specialist company to have a turbo conversion resulting in big money?

iv got no idea about turbos what so ever so exscuse me if i sound a little stupid. im just seeing if it is possible to reach 100+bhp or something like that.. just a little bit more than the standard 75bhp really..

I wouldn't bother whatsoever mate. The 1.2 was Renaults budget engine so it would be pointless wasting ANY money on the engine. I would try and save up for a 1.4 16v OR 1.6 16v which have the kind of bhp your after (98bhp & 110bhp)

yer, i agree, but just dont want the hastle ov having to sell and buy again and then sort out insurance lol i want to try and keep the 1.2 for a while till i have ncb to see if i can get insured on a 172 but it'll never happen knowin my luck lol

Yeh I know what your going through mate. best bet is to just stick with the 1.2 till your 19/20 and then see what a 172 insurance is like if your going that route.

When I put a turbo on my mx5, my insurance was refused by the company i was already with, and i had to go with a specialist insurer. The insurance was about double that without the turbo.

The turbo kit, when fully sorted cost me about 4 grand, the kit itself was 2.2k, and the ancillaries (standalone ecu, uprated rad, clutch, exhaust etc etc) cost another ~£1800

Worth it?

Well, I almost doubled the standard 130hp to ~245hp Unfortunately, this also stressed the engine out, and i had to repair everything almost twice as often! It was also a bit too exciting to drive in the wet, being rear wheel drive, and weighing less than a ton.

It was fun, but a royal pita. I'm never modifying like that again, if i want to go faster, i will buy a faster car - it is much cheaper and much less hassle.

yeah diesel engines only, they diesel evo's are rapid!

don't forget those diesel skylines / imprezas / 911 turbos / rs turbos / pulsars...
