turbo mk 1 clio

  mg zr turbo
Hi im new to the forum but could you give me so advice on what the best way to turbo a mk1 clio would be if it would be the 1.8 16v with a turbo kit and who would do such a kit or the volvo 1.7 turb out of the 480 thank you
:)

i would go for the volvo its a bit heavier but its already done so no need to buy a expensive turbo kit and fit it them remap etc . have a look on clio williams forum think few people have done it . Matt

the 480 engine has an awful output as standard so work is needed to get an exciting power figure. Swings and roundabouts tbh.
Personally I'm not sure I rate either option, but done well, both would be schweet

what power outputs am i looking at for each one and what would be needed to get there . also is there any one on here that has done eather

Don't know if you can view projects as a forum user. But this is an example of a sorted F7R (williams block) turbo. http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=324019
This engine will be good for 300 odd bhp, at which point the gearbox would very quickly remove all it's toys from the pram.
Bare in mind this F7R is really well sorted. It's been previously owned by a company who designed a turbo package. The engine has been properly chemically cleaned and the oilways sorted (oil is always a big issue when going turbo as im sure you know)

There are no current projects for the 480 1.7 block, but it's an easy install. Power output wise, I have no Idea what the bottom end can handle "as is". 200 bhp is a good point to aim for.

The main problem, and the most annoying limiting factor of renault engines with big power outputs is the gearboxes. For instance, running around 200bhp thru a valver GBox and you'll have swarf in the Gbox oil you drain out. Williams boxes are stronger, and 172 boxes stronger still but none are as strong as most of the boxes that VAG make for similar displacement engines.

Maybe drop in a 172 engine & do a few mods to it ??
Ok it won't be turbo'd but your starting out with more bhp than a 1.8 16v (valver) engine.

agreed. Just enough power to really pan it and plenty of experienced F4R valver owners to help.

Have a look over on www.clio16valver.co.uk, there are several people on there who own Mk1's with 1.8 16v Turbos. Try searching on that site and you will get most of the answers your after as its a common topic there. In terms of power output it will vary greatly depending on what spec you built your engine to. Some 1.8 16v Turbos are only running 200bhp whilst others are pushing 400bhp, if you want the cheapest option then you are looking at a low boost conversion which would use the standard internals pretty much and you could run upto about 220 - 230 bhp relatively reliably. The next step is when you look at a high boost low compression conversion, if done using forged parts etc etc you could be looking at 300bhp+, however this is obviously more expensive as you would have to make a lot of internal changes to the engine.

If you do decide to go down that route you could probably do the conversion for a low boost setup for about 1000 - 1500 pounds if you source all the bits yourself and get second hand bits, if you are wanting a company to do it all for you it will be quite a bit more expensive.
