turboing a 172 ??

hey all i have a mk2 ph1 172 and im looking in to putting a turbo on does anyone on here have a guide as to all the parts i will need please ??

There is no single definitive list of parts as people do it in such different ways.

If you want a decent gain, you'll need to decompress the engine, and IMHO you should be going aftermarket management not messing around with the standad rubbish.

The way I would do it personally, is exactly the same way that MWMsport did with their turbo car, there is a thread in the build section called "soon to be turbo" or something like that IIRC.

258bhp, drives mint, been totally reliable.

Basically though, its decompressed by bigger chamber volumes in the head, and its using aftermarket ecu to control the fuelling and timing

Is there anyone avalible other the ktec ect that can supply and fit parts cheap?

I mean are there any mechanics on here that are confident enough to fit a turbo ect if parts are supplied

MWMsport will, but they are just putting a load more miles on the conversion first to make sure its reliable.

Ultimately any conversion on a customers secondhand engine is going to be full of unknowns, so they'll never be able to guarentee the bits they havent touched, much like if you were to fit throttle bodies to a tired engine its only going to die quicker now its living at the top of the rev range more etc, but at least they are doing their best to test it as well as they can on a typical high miles engine.

The biggest problem with offering any sort of turbo conversion commerically is that its so easy for the customer to then f**k about with it afterwards and wreck something that would have been reliable if they kept away from adjusting the actuator etc!

Engine dynamics offer some quite interesting products but I cant help but chuckle at some of their power claims etc.

Would love to see a dyno dynamics printout of their power figures TBH

Like this bit about their cams (copies of the C+B ones)
Early testing has shown performance levels around206 BHP from a MK1 172 test car which is also fitted with an Induction kit, Inlet matching, exhaust modifications and obviously a custom remap. We expect around 212 BHP from the 182 models with the cams fitted and simular mods.

I really like those particular profile cams, but f**k me 212bhp from a set of cams and matched inlets on a standard 182 engine is cloud cuckoo land!

I just dont understand why they feel the need to just blatantly lie!

And the turbo conversion they do is just yet another variant of low boost pressure and standard 11:1 Cr just like most of the other kits out there, none of which really give good results due to the CR.

lol i imagine they do have a lot of disapointed customers wondering why they only have 185 hp instead of 200 +

Indeed.
Good cams, not slagging the product off at all, but their claims are ridiculous so I would take anything else they say with a bit of a pinch of salt too.

The figures they give would be good results on a throttle body engine with those cams!
