Hi, Just got a new 32" LG LCD - was thinking about getting a home theatre kit - however am i correct on thinking that the speakers only work when a dvd is playing??

My uncle has a system where the speakers work when watching 'normal' tv...

He's away at the moment - just wondering how i could achieve this - would ideally prefer just a set of speakers for the tv - but any suggestions would be welcome.

my pana 5.1 work all the time.

not sure how it does it, but talking comes out the front speakers and just backgroun noise comes from the back ones.

Yer - just wondering though what feature kits hold that allow them to play 'normal tv' through the speakers aswell as a dvd or ipod etc. Maybe a set of tv speakers would be better - do they do tv spekaers, like surround sound ones?

I got this (because I wanted wireless rear speakers but needed infra-red ones as already having enough interference problems with wireless network/DECT/doorbell/video sender):

Got SkyHD connected to the optical input on it, and phono connection from the TV's sound output. When watching an HD programme on Sky or a DVD from the built in player, you get Dolby Digital sound. Anything else (like PS3/XBox360/VCR/PC) which are connected only to the TV, you get some other kind of surround sound that is looped through the TV.

to get the tv sound through the amp you will need to have a sound output connector on the tv, this will normally be phono (red and white cables) or optical and then when connected to the amp and the tv on will output its sound to the amp and comes out of the decent speakers.

This is easy,just went through this myself.

RCA leads is what you need,basically audio out on tv (red & white socket) to audio in on back of home DVD player (red & white) .... piece of piss .

assuming it has them, my dads new tv hasn't and hes been used to doing it this way before but he can't do it, it (TV) only has optical out and his amp doesn't have optical in.

Personally I'd only bother with an amp if you want the best from your DVD's (or HD-DVD/BR) OR you have something like Sky HD which broadcasts some material in DD5.1 which your home cinema/amp will obviously show the benefits of.

It says "Audio line in - Analog: Aux"...si I'd say with a stereo RF coax lead you should be OK to run your TV through it.

Yes. Optical in would be perfect for the sound. Make sure your TV has an optical out. I know the leads are about £15 each. It would be ideal if you could buy an AV reciever with more than one optical in as 360's and ps3's have an optical out so therefore you can achieve 5.1 surround from your games. Richer sounds is your best bet tbh!

Yup, you'll need to buy some speakers.
