Twingo GT banger

So, as per the bangernomics thread, I've joined @Adeyspec on planet Twingo. Obviously mine is s**t and his isn't, but what can you do.

I sold my 197 a couple of months ago in preparation for a dramatic change in circumstances. That's all dragging on a bit, so I was in need of another car. I'd been using a friend's silver 197 but he needed it back. Luckily another friend was selling this, so a deal was done.

It's a 1.2 TCe GT, so has the 100PS 1149cc turbo engine. It's done 135k, doesn't have much MOT and the cambelt was changed in 2014, so it might blow up at any moment. That being said, it was only £300, it drives ok, has loads of history, and has NS2-Rs all round, so I'm not going to complain. Will look into having the belt done as, if it's cheap enough, I can do it and should still be ok when I come to sell it.

I'll post some more pictures later, as I'm about to get underneath it and try to fix a bit of an exhaust blow.

I've already thrown a couple of buckets of water over it and made a start on cleaning the interior. I need to get the rear seats back as they're in the guys loft, but no real plans other than tidying it up a bit. I'd like to remap it as it's painfully slow, but I don't know if it's really worth it.

To be continued.

looks good that, ns2 means its ready for full send (y) you might find it a little bland to a 197 but a few little tweaks will waken it up :D

It feels like it's going to roll over at the moment. I think the tyres are a bit much for the standard suspension 😂

How do I get rid of the dump valve? I want it to chatter

Looks very decent for the price! But you could’ve put some pictures of it clean! 😂

I couldn't be bothered earlier. Will post some in a bit.

I've found a pretty high quality exhaust bodge, so going to have to break out the welder I think.

I don't sorry, I'm super pikey and didn't use a bung, I used a huge blanking grub screw because it fit  😁 as I don't have the pipework I cant check it either.

That sounds like my kind of thing 😂 I might have a bung about somewhere. Do you just remove the dump valve, then bung the two inlet pipes?

and block the pressure reference pipe that goes to the top of it, but basically yes. I think the long recirc pipe back to the turbo intake can be removed fully to make it a little neater (y)

oh be careful yanking the pipe work near the throttle body, the boost pipes are plastic and can fracture.

Bit of an update as I was messing about with it today...

I gave the interior plastics a bit of a clean and scrubbed the front seats as they were pretty dirty. Don't have any before pictures as I forgot, but they came up ok:

Annoyingly, my vacuum cleaner has died, so couldn't hoover it out. Will have to do that another time. Steering wheel has seen better days too...

I gave the outside a very quick wash, just to get a sense of how bad the body work is. Found a few issues.

Missing bit of wiper linkage:

Headlights need sorting:

One of the GT badges is missing from the front bumper:

On the subject of the exhaust, it was blowing a bit. My mate said the centre section had snapped the other day, so he had bodged it. He wasn't lying 😂

PXL_20210721_145037094.jpg

It was all a bit loose and he hadn't used any exhaust paste, so I took it apart and tried to seal it as best I could, but it's still blowing a bit. I think I am just going to weld it together on Friday though. I'll leave one bit clamped so it can come off again, but will weld the rest. Obviously it needs a new exhaust, but I'm too tight for that.

Lastly for today, I gave the bonnet a quick once over to see if I could get it a bit better. It came up ok, but there's quite a bit of paint damage unfortunately:

Oh, does anyone know what this is? I found it in the boot...

More to come Friday if it doesn't fall apart.

First commute completed this morning. It drives ok. The oil smell is a bit unpleasant so might have to try and deal with that.

The NS2-Rs can get in the sea as well. I'm sure they're great, but the noise is beyond irritating.

to be fair injectors and a map could be done for sub 400.... you'd make it back on sale easy I think (y)

Do you need an intercooler/exhaust? That being said, I don't know if the 135k engine/clutch would appreciate it a lot.

Really need to see about the cambelt first if anything.

just make sure your intercooler is clean and ok tbh. Its not the best but still ok. exhaust stock again isnt too bad. my clutch seemed ok but others have written them off pretty quickly.

Not sure I can justify a 500+ mile round trip to map a £300 car unfortunately 😂

In brighter news, I sorted the exhaust today. No pictures as I was a bit pressed for time, but I took the two repair pieces out and welded them together on the bench, then put it back in place and welded it to the centre section. That part wasn't much fun as the centre section is a bit rusty, but it's now much more solid, doesn't blow horrendously, and there's only one clamp instead of three (I kept the one that attached it to the butchered down pipe in case it ever needs to come apart).

I've also got the back seats, so will put those back in tomorrow.

Got given the rear seats, so fitted them this afternoon:

Weirdly, since cleaning the front seats, the inside of the car smells quite bad. I don't know if disturbing the dirt in them has caused it or something, but it's pretty unpleasant. Not really sure what to do about it at the moment.

I can't believe they are going so cheap now. I spent more than £300 on a set of new tyres on mine earlier this year. 😅

I don't know if they are really. The cheapest on eBay was £1300 last time I looked. I don't know what they sell for through Facebook etc.

The regs I read the other day were far from clear, but it would be ace if you could go in sub 1400 :ROFLMAO:

Usually 1400 or less, and greater than 1400 to 2000

Then novice and pro classes in each as I understand it

  Twingo 133 Cup,
There is currently a nice gt taga/road rally car on ebay all ready to go. I am also putting my 133/163 Twingo up for sale (currently just doing the ad) that would make an excellent all round rally car for stage, taga or road rallying. Especially for road rallys the torque from the 1.2 turbo would be good.

Fitted an induction kit following the same pattern as @Adeyspec used on his old engine. Also blocked off the recirc. valve so it chatters away now.

Need a smaller air filter really, and to do a tidier job of the recirc. blank but whatevs

So it seems the poor Twingo has met it's end. I sold it last September, just before I emigrated, but it has since been sold again by the sounds of it.

Anyway, my mate (the guy I bought it from) sent me this picture earlier. No one hurt at least.

Bye bye Twingo.
