tyre law?

  Lionel Richie
right here's one for you all

my mate has just become a copper and he says the following

per axle you must have the same tyres MAKE MODEL AND SIZE

now as far as i'm aware same size per axle and above 1.6mm and thats it, make and model is irrelevant

he's bet me £20 on this, i'm 99% sure i'm correct, but doubt has slipped into my mind!

for example if i had a nankang with 2mm on front left, a goodyear with 8mm on front right i'd be illegal he reckons, bullshit i say

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
can't see them enforcing that successfully tbh... and it would be news to me seeing as i know of many cars that pass mot's with random tyre combinations

Surely you're right fred, if not then if you got a bad flat in a 182, went to a tyre garage, and wanted a new tyre but they didnt have your brand you'd have to buy two, or none? Otherwise they'd be fitting something for you which is technically against the law?

  Lionel Richie
yeah he even went on to say if you have a flat you have to change both tyres, he's definitely talking out of his arse or its a law that no one adheres to

the amount of cars you see with different tyres on all 4 corners!

as far as i've known for the past 15years is above 1.6mm and same size per axle = legal

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
exactly. and i'm lead to believe its only 1.6 mm across 3/4 of the tyres surface aswell.

  Lionel Richie
yeah correct! i'm no tyre fitter, but i think he's either being a hitler or they've brought in a new law or i'm about to pocket £20

  BMW F21 125d
Your mate clearly knows nothing. 1.6mm & same size as you said.

The Make/Model of the tyre doesn't come into affect. Good job really too, or else the police would be very busy prosecuting everyone who doesnt have 4 of the same brand!

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
not a hobby bobby is he? a pcso wotsit! better not shout about it incase her madjestys finest get some ideas.

  Golf GTD Mk7
never heard that to be honest. But if that was the case they'd be dishing out tickets all over the show. None of my mates stick to the correct tyres.

When we sell you tyres we have to make sure they are the same quality. Assymetric on each side etc. Cant put new non-directional tyres on 1 side and directional on another.
Its not illegal to drive with them but legally we cant sell them/fit them.

You are £20 up.

we have to authorise new tyres on a driven axle to match the other side, but that's just good practice, don't think it's the law.

the maserati we had not so long back, main dealer said we had to fit a matching tyre on the opposite side (undamaged) just as a precaution so that both tyres were of even wear etc

  Megane R26
when i had my last clio mot'd, it went with 2 different tyres on the front and it failed because of tht. not sure what the law is on this though.

  Lionel Richie
but is he legally right and its just one of those laws that no one bothers with?

we do call him little hitler (he's 6ft8 and Danish, blonde hair blue eyes, you know the type!)

  RenaultSport clio 18
He's wrong. You can't mix and match cross ply and radial, but makes of tyre don't matter. Trust me, I'm a police officer with a bit more experience.

  lift number 1 @ btm
that is definately how the law works in france, maybe the same in other parts of europe too?

  Lionel Richie
update, my mate still isn't having it!

he's quoted this off the kwik fit web page

"It is also a legal requirement to ensure that tyres of different construction types are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle"

we all know that refers to cross ply and radial, but he thinks it means you can't have a michelin and a goodyear on the same axle

  BMW 330ci Clubsport
I think you are ment to have the same make amd model on the same axel. But the tyre wear thing is wrong
