Tyre Question....

B

Ben^

Ordering some Turini's for my 172 when I get paid (also going to renew my CS membership! forgot about that lol) and want to put some R888's on as I am looking at getting a few track days in this summer. The nearest size Toyo do is 195/50/16 as opposed to the normal 195/45/16, is it a bad idea fitting those tyres as they will put the rolling radius out and effect speedo etc, but by how much?

Has anyone done this??

If its a bad idea then what do you suggest? I have always used Eagle F1's on my standard alloys and they seem to do a good job.

surley a 205/45/16 will still put the ratio out though as its 45% of 205 and not 195??

They any good though and will a 205 fit ok on a 16" Turini?

Cheers

My car (182) came with 205/45/16's from the factory, so no rubbing for me. Unfortunately I can't say whether it'll be fine on a 172.

What are the hankook like for everyday use? Im looking at 888's, but the hankooks look nearly half the price, and ive heard good things about them aswell :)

+1, they look like they would handle the wet better having more tred...

They seem to get a decent enough write up on different forums, one guy got 8000 and 2 track days out of a set on an impreza. Half the price of the 888's and twice the mileage so they would seem like the right option, just need to confirm if someone has been running 205/45/16's with no problems on a 172 now....

195 R888s are more like 205 width for "normal" tyres.

I have 195/50R16 Yoko A048s and they are a tight fit. I removed the front arch liner to be safe. You won't be able to go as low as with 195/45 tyres but mine is still 30-40 mm lower. When I've worn these out though I reckon I'll get 15" wheels for my next track tyres.

I want some 15" 2118's but they wont go over my front brakes! Coilovers are next on my list as I am running on stock suspension atm.

What are the AO48's like in the wet? Might go for them on the turini's Also what kind of mileage do you get out of a set as I know they are rather pricey...

What 4 pots are you running Ben?

They are KTR's 300mm 4 Pots with braided lines and green stuff pads. Excellent bit of kit if you are willing to part with some coin, can brake later and harder into corners and they give a better feel on the pedal too.

Might change the pads soon as I have heard these pads are disc killers!

(Plus becuase they are a 2 piece disc I am hoping like most you can just buy the disc's and keep the housings which makes it a little cheaper in the long run, not asked K Tec about this yet though)

Fine everyday. I imagine they'll aquaplane at lower speeds than something like the Exalto, but I haven't had any problems in the wet yet.

Nice one.

I'm running the compbrake B4- 4 pots on mine, similar set-up. With 295mm discs, so i should be able to fit 15'' wheels.

I wouldn't be too sure tbh, these are a tight squeeze on 16's and the KTR 15" version uses 285mm discs, if its as tight as these are then u may struggle.

I would get one test fitted before buying any just to be on the safe side.

Yes mate very tight fit, it looks tight atm with my 16'' turinis.

I know that fmp used to run 15'' wheels over his. :S

unless the actual rim is thinner and the 16's are thicker I cant see it happening with these, might look into it in some more detail as I would love some 15" 2118's

Yes mate... i'm hopefully going to get a set of anthracite 15'' 2118's and some R888's...:)

That is exactly what I was wanting! Then drop it 50mm on some H&R's and it should be a right little track weapon!!

only thing that worries me is 195/50/16 for 888's, would mean i would be to increase the height on mine as they would probably rub as low as it is now.

205/46/16 i would get away with i think :) On pro race 1.2's ET37 i think, would 205's be ok?

sidewall height would increase by 1cm if you went from 195/45 to 195/50 and rolling radius would increase by around 5 to 6 cm to it shouldnt be too bad

speedo will be out by 3.4% so that wont be a prob really.

Im running stock suspension at the min so I think I will go with the 16" Turini/R888 combo and when I get round to purchasing some coilovers I will lower to suit.

(unless I find out that 15" 2118's will fit 4pots with 300mm discs!!)

Kind of hooked on the 2118's now !! specially when I can get the wheels for £444 and the 205/50/15 r888's for £77 each.

A lot cheaper than the Turini option, will prob go for that and if they dont fit over my brakes I will sell the 4 pot kit and buy another 4 pot kit with 285mm discs.

Choices Choices!!!!!

(btw those 15's with that tyre are more or less the same size as 16's with standard rubber so lowering shouldnt be a prob)
