Tyre 'vulcanising'.....where? N'pton....

I have a 500 mile old conti sport I bought as a set of 4........and this one has a puncture too near to the sidewall to be repaired 'normally'.......very frustrating.....

Does anyone in the Northamptionshire area, or surrounding counties know of a place that can vulcanise the tyre so keeping strength and slow puncture-less without the need to throw it away and spend £80 on a new one?

Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved.........
 
Apparently not........supprisingly :eek: the guy I spoke to at Kwik-fit seemed to know his stuff (an older chap) but said a very small amount of places do it........
 
what does it involve ? i have two tyres near the edge. both brand new. would rarther spend 40 getting them repaired then buying new tyres
 
cheers boosh, think it involves treating the rubber somehow to bond it properly.....

' Please do not confuse a tyre fitter putting a patch or plugging a nail hole with a larger version of a cycle tyre repair kit, to a professional repair using specialist techniques to cut out the damaged section and vulcanise a strong and multi layered patch to the carcase of the tyre, which also has the outside damage filled with raw rubber and ground down/regrooved to make an almost invisible repair(the cosmetic finishing done after vulcanising).'

now alll we need is to find a major garage that does it... im going round a few tomorrow and see how many "wtf is that"'s i get
 
the vulcanisation of rubber is the addition of sulphur.
It's added to natural rubber to make it stiffer. More sulphur, makes stiffer more hard wearing rubber.

TBH mate, that stuff is done in the factory. A place that could do it (I didnt know you could) are likely to charge a lot.
Lump it and get a new tyre :(
Some deals are good and some are not. you can never tell.
 
Did you get this sorted? I've found 2 places in Northants area that do this. Surprisingly I can't find any closer to me (Melton Mowbray)

I had 2 almost new P Zero Nero's stabbed in sidewalls on my drive last weekend. I had some Falkens from my old wheels swapped onto the 2 and put them on the rear then I went to wash car on saturday and found what looks like a fascia clip stuck in the rear nearside tyre. It's about 3mm too close to the edge for kwik fit to repair so looking to get it repaired.

Looks like a trip to Northants is in order for me otherwise it's 2 new P Zero's to go on and cheapest I can find them is £73 a piece fitted :(

Not much luck at the minute.

I wouldnt bother. I repair tyres and there is F-all to the sidewall, its string and rubber. At the end of the day your endangering yourself and anyone else that uses your car if you drive with a sidewall repaired tyre.
 
As above, stop being tight and get a new tyre ordered! They are pretty important!!
 
It's not 1 tyre it'd be 2. £150 best price I've found for P Zero's. Not a case of being tight. It's a case of 4 decent tyres being binned in the space of 2 weeks. :(

It's not the sidewall either if you bother to read the post it's in the tread towards the outside edge.

http://www.brooksidetyres.co.uk is the place. They repair truck tyres that hold a lot more than 30 PSI so they must be confident that their work is spot on otherwise I wouldn't fancy their chances of getting liability insurance or putting a guarantee on their work for the life of the tyre.
 
It used to be very, very common - however these days the labour and kit involved make it less cost effective than it used to be. £50 a tyre is about right for a proper repair so 30 quid saving on a new one............. hardly worth it IMHO!

However if you can find an old boy type place that does it at a good price then its worth it - I wouldn't recommend it for track use though where tyres will run at sustained high temps.

The shoulder is a weak point on a tyre. Im not saying your tight but I personally would just go to a tyre merchant, sell them the knackered tyres then buy some more. It really isnt worth the hassle. A blow out can happen at any time while driving but moreso when your tyre is damaged. The reason wagons have vulcanising done is because their tyres are a lot more expensive.
 
Hmmm.

Really in 2 minds what to do to be honest. I spoke with the guy at that place and he reckoned would take him a couple of hours to do it so doesn't sound like a bodge job or anything.
