tyres and sizes

looking for four new tyres on my tyres at the moment. the size i need is 185/55/15, the thing is if i go for 195/50/15 theirs so much cheaper, i remember reading on hear the 195/50 can screw up your abs and from having a set on before it did lock up quite easy any opinions?
also because my coilovers are pretty stiff nearly every tyre that has been removed from my car has had no strength left in the sidewall,i take it looking for one with a higher load rating would help?any recomendations?

So long as you swop all 4 tyres your OK. The speedo is ever so slighlt our but compaired to cars nomal inacuracy its nothing you'll notice.

I'd just stick with the tyres you like load rating won't make any difference the coilovers won't effect the tyres,

ok cheers edde(again lol!).just the last set i took of if u put your foot on the sidewall it would just fold an i'd have thought these should still be quite strong.
i would like to try the original tyres my car came with but were these micehlins or dunlops anyone know?trying to pick between michelin pe2, dunlop sp1 and continental premium contact though for some reason theirs four different kinds

Everyone has there onw preferences I like the original ones the Continetal I've got 3 at home in 185/55/15 spec if you want to buy partially worn no idea whay only 3 but I swoped due to cost to 195/50/15 but the same spec tyres.
Few tyres have a deciet sidewall the only good ones are track spec or slicks.

I'm not sure who the original supplier was they probably swope ever now and again due to cost I know Contininetal have supplied loads there on all the ones I see.

I personally prefer the Continentals. I had Michelins on my 1st Clio and although they were pretty good I find the Continentals better, but I think it really is down to personal preference.

i can remember the first tyres were great just not what brand i've been through that many!
pm'd you about the tyres mate

eviljohn i'm tempted to go for the eagle f1s so many people say their great, but every tyre i seem to try that has the v shape tread pattern seem to be good for going flying down wet roads when it comes to a corner are pretty rubbish that kind of puts me of.moneys no object this time so just want to get the best i can for once.i take it you've got a set what others have you tried?
debz a hope your right think i'm about to get myself a set of the continentals!

Well I personally don't think you will be disapointed. I have no problems going round corners at high speed in the wet. I hope if you get them you will find the same. Good luck with your choice whatever you finally decide on.

my car used to be great for going round bends in the wet,now it feels like your driving on snow not water their is basically no grip!i have changed all rubber bushes and all balljoints and just about to get wheel bearings done and the camber and alignment.i've got four tiger tyres on just now budget tyres lol so fingers crossed a decent set of tyres and i'll be able to keep up with u ;)

Just out of interest what model and year is your car? I appears to me that older models were originally fitted with Michelins (like my V Reg Clio) but newer ones appear to all have Continentals. I may be wrong, and if I am , someone please correct me, but thats how it seems to me anyway.

its a 1.2 16v 52 plate. i have the feeling my car came with michelins i seem to remember the guy when i first changed them saying how dear they would be to replace. and i've saw a few 01+ clios in scrappys with michelin spare wheels. but like edde says may just have been whatever they were putting on at the time. i think dunlop continental and michelins are all approved tyres.
the michelin place near me wanted £93 a corner to fit the original tyres they use on clios!

Ah, it probably did have Michelins then, and they are definitely not cheap! I just paid £151 for 2 continentals from Kwik-Fit. If you are pretty sure you had Michelins and you liked those, then go for them. If however you are unsure, I think the Continentals are well worth giving a try. :)

Yeah I do have them, and been using them for about 2 years or so now. Had a few contis, 1 set of dunlops (utter shite) and michelin energy! The eagles are by far the best in every situation other than snow! Tehy grip long and hard around corners, fooking great tyres!

I agree with john. I started running them after using his wheels for a week. The are ace in the wet and sublime in the dry. I run coilovers too and dont have any probs :)

Have a look on my tyres and black circle. Black circle are the cheapest i can find by a few pounds.
£159.52 for 4 Continental premium contack ie original compound.
The Premium Contact 2 are the same compound but different tread patern which I found didn't survive as well on track as there thinner. On normal roads they were very similar though.
Just remember that on standard alloys 195/50/15 tyres will wear away the rear aches slightly. Its not an issue realy I'm not sure if normal road use it woulnd't wear away though as mine been driven on track so the wheels have been right in the arches.
