Ubuntu updates

  172 Cup
Just installed Ubuntu properly after using the live cd for a couple of days and it prompted me to install some updates. (By some I mean 137 updates, and I thought you said Windows was bad lol)

Getting to the point.. It's downloaded them all and it's now installing them but seems to have paused/stopped/got stuck at "configuring capplets-data". It's been on that for about 10 minutes and I wondered if this was normal?

(It's not the laptop that's froze as I'm typing this on it now and can run other programs fine)

Some of those updates will be updates to the various programs installed with Ubuntu I should think.

For the year I used it I didn't have any update problems, I can only really see one post on "configuring capplets-data" on the Ubuntu forums and in that one the machine froze, rebooted itself and then they had no desktop.

Give it time, it should either complete successfully or fail, in which case you should get a message telling you why.

capplets-data
"contains data files (icons, pixmaps, locales files) needed by the configuration applets in the gnome-control-center package"

Best bet with Ubuntu related queries is to post here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

Cheers Si.

Literally as soon as I'd hit the enter key it moved on to the next item in the list :)

It is a pain in the arse. For some reason it replaces the prog not patches. It will be a big download if there are updates for open office and gimp.

I set mine to only check once per week so dont have to do it every day.

  A blue one.
I remember CDE on solaris, that was the nuts. Then came the klone (sic)!

I thought the first couple of major versions of KDE were crap, they do appear to be getting somewhere now though. Still sucks that it's based on QT though.

I'd say there are 3 main benefits:

1. No viruses, spyware, malware etc.
2. Free updates, so no paying for the next version.
3. Package Manager - no more googling for an application, just type in the search box and install.

do you think i would have any trouble finding apps?

iv got so many things that I use regular....everything from a cso converter (for coverting psp games) to bart pe builder (for building bootable images for windows)

also would things like adobe photohop cs2, macromedia flash, nokia pc suite etc all work ok do you know?

virus, spyware and the likes arent a problem, iv not had anything in years.

Its worth mentioning, 137 update yes.. but those updates include updates to the operating system ASWELL as all the free software packages you have installed.. windows dont do that.. you wanna update a program.. you gotta go to the programs website or update via the program itself, with linux its all in the one place.

well iv been investigating running photoshop cs2 and macromedia flash on linux (2 main apps i use)

seems dead straightforward :p

- Fire up a terminal session and type the next commands;
TIP: Instead of using apt-get, you can install them with the Synaptic Package Manager located in the System/Administration menu
  • $ sudo apt-get update
  • $ sudo apt-get install wine and then type “yes”
  • $ sudo wine /*To create the wine file structure*/
  • $ sudo apt-get install recode and then type “yes”
- Then you need to copy all the necessary files from the Windows box;
  • Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/”
  • Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/profile/all users/Application Data/”
  • Copy the whole Macromed (No mistake with the “ai”) from “c:\Windows\system32\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/system32/”
  • Finally, copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\Common Files” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/”
- Now you need to export the registry keys of the Dreamweaver;
  • In your Windowx box, type “regedit” in the command-line and export the whole “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Macromedia/” to “macromedia.reg”, then copy it to your your Ubuntu and convert it to ascii with “$ recode ucs-2..ascii macromedia.reg”. Afterwards, type “$ sudo wine regedit macromedia.reg” to run it with wine.
  • That’s it! Type “$ wine dreamweaver.exe” or “$ wine flash.exe” and enjoy Dreamweaver & Flash in Ubuntu ;)
similar thing for photoshop, and i read nokia pc suite doesnt work and crashes ubuntu too! i think ill stick with windows lol :)

Like I said in the other thread.. your trying to run native windows programs on linux.. I dare you to try and run a native linux program on windows..

You see what im getting at right?

PS. looks like a 2 minute job to me..

aye 2 min job if you always have a windows box at the ready to install apps on first! hehe! :)

i do see what your getting at tho matey! :D

I think it's pretty obvious Linux isn't for you. Get a Mac instead running OSX.

It's kinda like complaining about my new Buggati Veyron being crap because I can't go off-roading in it - I wouldn't, I'd buy a 4x4 instead :p

And in fairness, if you wanted to use Linux, you'd use the GIMP and VIM to make web sites with ;)
You should be using a text editor anyway, no matter what OS you use :p

i think you are right! lol not bothered about mac tho!

just cant see any benefits over disadvantagesd for me personaly thats all. from the benefits people have mentioned these dont make a difference as i dont have any bother with xp anyway (i.e virus, spyware, malware, updates etc). :)

and i do use code by hand but within DW, as DW is great for managing sites, and flash is great for making fancy bits and bobs!

I'm exactly the same.
After using Linux as my main desktop for years, I've now got a Mac running OSX and a PC running XP.
Why? Cus' they work for me better in that role than Linux did. My Mac is awesome!

Servers are all Debian. Why? Cus' they work the best for me in that role.

New ClioSport server? That runs Vista Home Premium.. why? Cus' it's loveleh! ;) :p :rasp:
