Have you had a real good look at the springs? Might be that they've chipped stopping them seating properly? My top mount is gone and its an obvious clunk.

there's a bit of a pattern developing-

a new rack was fitted, it was fine for a couple of days and gradually returned to being crap.

i replaced the wishbone bushes with powerflex ones, it tightened it up but after about half hour driving it had returned to being crap.

i fitted new solid top mounts on monday night. problem solved, nice and tight, but after about half hour driving it had returned to being crap.

a specialist fitted the rack back in june and said everything else checked out fine. it's been tracked on a hunter system three times in the past few months, twice since the rack was fitted.

not sure what to do now.

I've had a similar problem as you described, with the compromised drive-ability at high speeds. I've tried some of the things you have and even replaced, uprated my front pads and disc as I found a snapped reno OEM pad lol (Reno thought a warped disc was causing a vibration).

However nothing has fixed it, but a nice fella at K-tec is adamant its a near side drive shaft problem. Am gonna look at getting this replaced soon... I'll keep you updated, but you might like to try that and inspect yer inner bearings? I don't have the kit or space to do this myself, really wish I could :(

To Note: I do get heavy torque steer and a sort of crashing under quick cornering.

i've been reading about typical symptoms of a crappy driveshaft. one thing i can say is that on a smooth road it's perfect under any amount of acceleration and speed, and i don't get any crashing under quick cornering. i don't get heavy torque steer either.

i won't rule it out though. it should be in a garage in about a weeks time to have it checked out again, depending upon other circumstances.

I am having a similar problem...

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?589323-quot-Twitchy-quot-Steering...

Sounds like you have spent a fair amount of money trying to sort it out, I think I am going to try and book mine in at a specialist and see what they say. I've check for play in all the usual places but everything seems fine. I was just going to replace the track rod ends and ball joints then get it tracked but I think getting it checked over at a garage first might be best.

Let us no how you get on.

from my other thread: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?586854-Harder-to-steer-left-than-right-(

i fitted new top mounts and they were as bad as the ones i took off, so i've put some solid top mounts from pure motorsport on there and it's a little better, but it's still got the problems it had before the rack was replaced. harder to steer left, and the tracking still seems to have a mind of its own sometimes. the garage that diagnosed the rack told me they wouldn't be able to do any more with the car despite not fixing the original fault, which means i'm probably going to have to take it to another garage for yet more work.

although good news today, it turns out i failed to deselect the legal option when i bought my home insurance, so having spoken to a solicitor about the my situation they say it's a pretty straightforward claim against the garage and they are going to take up the case for me and it won't cost me a penny!

ey up, I was watching this and another thread with baited breath recently as I had similar issues. one road it would track one way, another and it would go the other. at motorway speeds, if the tarmac was poor quality if I floored it it would pull right and drift across lanes. It turned out to be something to do with it being lowered too much and was putting strain on the drive shaft compression points, or something vaguely along those lines. cut along story short, i had it raised about 10mm and I no longer have the issue.

somebody else mentioned driveshaft. my car's not lowered but it does seem to have had this issue ever since the box was changed 8 months ago, which would obviously involve playing with the driveshafts.

it went to danny a couple of weeks ago and everything checked out fine (apart from the camber being a bit on the extreme side) which left only a knocking sound coming from the rack area/newly replaced rack. it's currently at a renault dealer who have had a good look at it and have advised the sound is coming from the universal joint. they say there's no play in the joint and they wouldn't recommend changing it, but they've used stethoscopes apparently and that's where the sound is coming from.

sooooooo..... unless i accidently come across a steering column and feel like fitting it, it looks like i'm still getting shot of the clio. it's not going into anymore garages for this problem, apart from maybe to get some camber bolts to sort out my camber so i don't kill my tyres. i figured two well respected renault specialists and a renault dealer have had a look, i won't get much better than that. i'm going to run it through the winter- i figured i've spent a fair whack on it, i may as well get some use out of it- and replace it next year. i'm not against getting another one (a 182 if i do it again) at least i'll know what to look for. either that or a diesel for the commute, an A3 or VRS.

it was NOT coming from the UJ. If you remember i got up under the dash and had my hand on the UJ while wiggling the wheel. I'm confident that there was play internally on the new rack causing the noise. It's not there when the engine is off, so it's not going to be external

  172DD Cup
one thing i haven't tried is checking for play (hands at 9 and 3) with the engine running, i only ever check with the engine off. this might show something up.
i'm going to disconnect the u/j from the rack on the weekend and if the rack still clicks it's going back to renault. i have a complaint open with renault uk at the moment so they're monitoring this too.

  172DD Cup
i noticed there is a clicking coming from the pas pump area, pretty much at the same time as the knocking i get from the rack. sounds like a relay clicking.

i've asked renault for a report on their findings which they are sending to me, i'll post it here
