Update: 182 back to dealers

My 182 went back to the dealers yesterday, due to the exhaust making a funny noise (sounding like a diesel!). Dropped it off in the morning, had a phone call about 13.00 saying "we've looked at your exhaust and the cat has gone!" "we haven't got any in stock but can get one next day delivery, do you want to pick your car back up and drop it off again tomorrow or leave it with us?"

I left the car with them overnight as it was the easiest option. They are going to let me know later today when it's ready.

Anyone else had problems with their "cat's" going or exhaust?

Yes. I had my catalyst crack where the pipe joins the box - that was after about 6 months. Had it replaced under warranty though. £800 minimum if you have to pay for it yourself!

I think there was a thread of Roy Munsons about, same happened to his 182 Cup and he had to wait while Renualt located one.

I wonder if the cat is any direct link to the toxic warning light problem these 172/182's have had in the past - lambda sensor failure anyone?

Mine had a new CAT after 18 months of ownership. They found a 6inch crack in it.

Update: Picked it up from the dealers and all is well, back to normal. Let's hope nothing else goes wrong *touches wood*

Yes i had this problem also,pushed a bit too hard on the track i think,it started whistling and ended up sounding like a tractor,took it to renault and the mechanic said that the joint had slipped off,then he came back and told me that the cat had broken aswell,2 days waiting for the part to come and be fit and it was all sorted,been right ever since.

Sounds like a problem I've just had driving hom elast night car cut out limped doen the road loads of throttle just to keep it ticking over and sounds like a Diesel, Toxic fume light's going crazy!

Sounds like it may need a new cat by sounds of things!

I had the same on my 182, it had totally new exhaust at 9k miles and was ready for another when I traded it in at 18500.

The Trophy one was sounding a bit rough, but that was just a bad seal apparently.

i had a emissions light come on in my 182 in december last year took it in and they said the CAT had gone so they replaced that and the lambda sensors and last month my emissions light came on again and when i took it in this time it was another lambda sensor.
i think they are either very poor quality or there is somthing the car is doing that is causing all these problems

yeah i didnt expect VW like quality but what gets me..

if renault just built decent stuff in the first place.. they would save billions in warranty claims!

mine went at 19k and i had to wait 3 weeks to get mine fitted cos were on back order (after they ordered the wrong one and me doing a 300 mile round trip to get it done),so you done pretty well there

I've got 41k miles on the clock. Had 16k on the clock when I got it but I've had no problems with exhaust so far. Luck of the draw I guess. I've had ECU replaeced, air con leak and knackered wheel arch liner instead though. I've just got my car back from the garage, it's had new anti-rll bushes and they've done something with the top mounts. They said it needs new rear suspension. They said £200 so I dunno what they're gonna replace. They said they'll contribute £145 tho. Oh and a gearbox mount too, although I still get the clunk when engaging 1st gear sometimes.

like they cant build the 182 with decent build quality and still sell it so cheap.

but they can build it poor quality, sell it cheap, and have all the warranty claim money going out their other accounts..

Gonna get the AA to tow me to the local Renault garage saturday, fingers crossed not to serious or expensive. it's a 20 month old import so should hopefully be covered under the Renault warranty!!!

out of interest what is it that causes the cat to fcuk up - my last car was a vts which i had from new and i went through 4 cats in the first 14k miles?
is it the excessive heat that breaks them down or what?

The most typical scenario is that an over-rich fuel mixture, caused by a defective fuel injection or carburetor setup, allows un-burnt fuel to find its way into the converter.
There, due to the heat generated in the catalysation process, the fuel burns inside the cat.
The substrate in the cat melts, then breaks up, resulting in exhaust system clogging and rattles.

Oh, and I'm nearly on 16K on my 182 and I've not had any problems as yet, apart from the usual knocks and rattles

picked up my 05 plate 182 other day, with 14k miles, loads of fun but when you brake from really high speed the exhaust rattles like mad. checked underneath, nothing seems amiss, but when you shut the boot it clanks a bit. THe build quality is laughable, but the car is sooo much fun I can live with it (as long as I have a warranty) !!

One thing Ive noticed with my 182 cat is that from cold as you first drive off it really pops as you back off the throttle like a metalic pop pop.....
