Urrr.....problem...big one?

  1.8 8v RSi
ok so a couple of weeks back i got stuck on the m1 in big traffic due to an accident in the blistering heat... i was lowish on petrol the light flickered on n off every now n again.
after about 15 mins of stop start driving in 1st gear the car started doing that thing is does 30 seconds before it stops all together. it did that for ages....as if the power was just being sapped....but the car never ran out of petrol....the traffic cleared and i made it a further 20 miles back to my gfs home and then a further 5 miles to petrol station... by this time the light was on perminantly....
ever since that day the car has been doing that sudden slowing down when crawling along in taffic in first 2nd and 3rd gear but it only does it around 2-3k revs...
when i press the pedal lightly to accelerate really slow it jolts once then climbs then before 3k it slows down slightly...
I also noticed my petrol gauge has been lying to me every so often...one moment it says i running out of fuel....5 mins later im 2 notches above the reserve line... recent mods is a k&n appollo filter without the intake hose fitted and also i notice the rubber pipe that connects to the Throttle Body?(not good on names) is split and there's dirt inside the TB?(not a great deal and its temporarily fixed with ducts tape)

sorry for the essay

if you stick ya head underneath of car just in front of drivers side rear wheel the fuel filter is the round unit in the pipes. its just a matter of pulling off the pipes each side and replacing with new one. but make sure you put ya finger over the pipe with cum out of the tank otherwise ya might lose ya petrol. fuel filters are fairly cheap to buy it pays to change it if it hasnt had one for a wile anyway because it is a part that should really be changed now and again as part of regular maintenance and servicing.

i think i'll try that.....if not then its not really a loss.....especially if its not been replaced as you say....other advise would still be helpfull though

im not sure that would be problem as the filter wouldnt normally fill with s**t just like that would happen over time. but by changing the filter may jus help to make it run smoother.

I'd go with the fuel filter theory , especially if the car was running fine before you got your petrol down to almost empty . They only cost around a tenner , 10 mins of a job to do .

thing is though...i've ran a lot of my old cars down to the red light and they never had this problem...they all been roughly same reg to...although i havent done it to the 2 clios i own except this one time

i find jayar or gsf (German, Swedish and French) or any other trade retailer really cheap for all replacement parts
