V5C Advice

Seen a car I'm after but seems there is a V5C issue.

Chap selling hasn't got it in his name as he got it from a mate in the trade and apparently he never got the section 10 green slip - he just got given the main V5C (the bit the seller should send off) without the section 9&10.

He rang DVLA and they said get a V62 with a covering letter and apply for a new one - which he hasn't don't as yet.

Problem is this would add an additional owner for only a short period of time, which I'm not that keen on.

If I bought the car with a receipt and applied for the V62 myself, or am I going to get issues?

Other way I guess is to send of the bit the seller should of sent off.

Too much to go wrong? Or what's the worse that could go wrong?

I'd take the V5C part he's currently got...

As far as I can see he's just got it to make money on it, I've done a HPi check and checked all old MOTs and it all comes out fine!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this is the only 182 I've found in 6 months of looking that I'm seriously interested in!!

If I haven't made anything that clear please ask, as I'm not sure if I've explained it that well!

Many Thanks

James

Put it this way, I'd get the front page of the V5C, same as this :

Problem is I wouldn't have the signature from the current owner (right at the bottom)

In an ideal world obviously this wouldn't happen, but this is the only one I've found which I'm only interested in haha

Can you contact the person named on the V5C?

Without their signature I'd expect the DVLA will have to write to them before issuing you with a new V5C.

Got a link to the advert?

First off dont worry to much about his signature, they rarely chack and aslong as theres a sig in the box they are happy.

So you have the v5 for the car you are interested in buying? If so fill it in, sign on his/her behalf on the left, you sign on the right. Done.

Hmm I wouldn't be comfortable forging someone's signature! If the seller is genuine they should be happy for you to contact the registered keeper. Assuming that goes OK then buy the car and send off a V62. No need to forge signatures and you won't have added the extra owner to the V5C.

You can just apply for a new v5c with the v62 yourself. Chances are the previous named owner sold the car for cash and forgot to send the v5c. Happens a lot with track cars and head gasket failures. The dvla won't prompt you unless it's been written off, exported or stolen. You don't need the named keeper.

The guy has part exchanged it as his mates garage? I assume yes. The mate is selling it to the op? I assume yes?

If yes to the above do what i suggest, save the faffing

I believe the DVLA will write to the previous registered keeper before issuing a new V5C though, so if they write back to the DVLA and say they don't want it transferred for whatever reason then the OP could be left without a valid V5C, therefore not able to tax it, therefore not able to legally drive it or leave it parked on a public road.

Could easily all be legit of course, but I would tread carefully.

I'm fairly sure that's exactly what's happened, or something similar

As I see it: Current owner on V5 part exchanged it to the garage, owner of garage sold it to his mate, and it's this mate which is now selling it....make sense?

Does seem a little long way of doing it but car has been looked after (obviously I'll view it) but belts done last year at DTM, HPi clear and MOT history is all fine.

I'd basically get the full logbook/V5C besides section 9 and 10, which I've included an example so you can see what they are :

So does it basically matter that section 9 and 10 missing?

I'd get the full logbook/V5 with the car (minus section 9+10 obviously!)

Many Thanks

Nine should have been sent off when it got part exchanged at the garage. The green slip normally stays with the main part of the V5.

The yellow slip should be winging its way to swansea, should be.

If the car has been part exchanged (find out) then there will be paperwork at the said garage to prove this (again, check)

Everything else is straightforward. The chap who part exchanged the car should have signed and dated the v5, he hasnt.

Pop a signature in there, fill your deatils and sign bottom right. Just make sure the above has been done.

Awaiting to hear back from the garage, but they obviously had it as some point as I've seen there old eBay advert (not sure if it actually sold on there)

Apparently the reason for no section 10 is that the current owner on the V5 (who in reality now is a previous owner) filled that in mistake instead of the section 9

Chap selling says he can get receipt proof from the garage to show it came from them

So is it all looking OK?

Worst is technically I can't tax it as I won't have the new owner slip bit (owner 10) until I get the V5 in my name, so It'll be a trailer back job

You can tax a car that isn't registered to you but you need the doc reference number I think

I did see, but technically only as the 'existing' owner (I assume the name on the V5) which I'm obviously not, so I'd rather just trailer it tbh

Anybody got any other advice/thoughts on this matter?

There won't be as the yellow slip has been sent to Dvla relinquishing them from any responsibility. It takes roughly two weeks for their computer to be updated, then that tax comes off the car.

You post the v5 off in your name and they will know that you will be the new owner and have taxed the car.

Why do you think their will be comeback from the owners, they have their new car I assume

Just add a 3 or a 4 to the current doc number at the beginning and that is the new keeper ref.
