With any forced inducted car, having slightly cold air won't make any difference. When the air gets compressed it heats up to high temperatures hence the need for an intercooler after the compression stage.
your filter setup depends really on how your mounting everything, Ideally you want a GOOD quality open induction kit mounted in a cold air spot ( sure fred said there is one down by the abs pump) or hanging through the front bumper. Depending on the power your going for you may find a enclosed type filter will restrict the flow.
What nick172cup says is right to some extent, it doesnt matter too much. But the colder the air into the turbo, the lower your intake temps will be.
Ktec supposedly had good gains with the V6 box on a Megane R26 but then Paul at RS Tuning uses an open filter on his 380 brake R26r. I think after a certain point the volume of air must be more important then the temperature??
Do bonnet-vents actually help?
I'm not thinking of the US-spec blowers you see on classic muscle cars, although that would be hero (and require a proper blower).
More of the 207 / Impreza / Celica style vents?
Can you use them as an air-intake? That's be a good sight cooler than the engine bay, woudln't it?
scoobys have the vent because there intercooler is placed there ( top mount IC ) .. so its the most effective way for the impreza to get cold air to it. You can place bonnet vents to aid cooling etc but it ( from what i know) can disrupt the air dyamnics through the engine bay ( how the air flows through ) Although if its well placed, like a scoop onto a specific enclosed filter ( or bucket ) then it can help and not disrupt things to much.
The scoop on sunbarus (especially the classics) only works to around 100mph hence the reason that so many imprezas need rebuilds after high speed runs. The intake temps rockets as the intercooler gets starved of cold air. If going for more than about 330bhp a front mount is required.
The dilemma I have is sell the v6 box and use it all for a cone filter or justice the v6 filter have. If it helps intake temps and fits I would be as well keeping it.
