Valver or 172

  Rb 182
Ok chaps and female chaps, i know its been asked 100's of times before but im asking again.

Im fancing a new car in Sept. I want to stay clio.

I love the Mk1 styling nice and boxy etc etc. Got lots of experiance with them (on to my 5th mk1, none of them have been a valver)

I have driven a mates valver and liked it, nice quick.

But they are getting on now, most are well over 100k and starting to show signs of rust/general wear. If they arent they want silly money for them.

Driven both of Johns 172's and loved them, they handle well as std and go well, stop well. It just does everything well.

Also they are alot newer and probably less likly to go wrong.

I'm looking to spend about £3k.

Opions please positives and negs for both if poss.

Cheers dave

replied over on clio16valver as well in more detail but I would say go for a mk1 and try and get a hybrid or a williams. if you hold out for a good one it will be reliable enough and should be quicker/more fun than a 172 IMO.

For 3k you'll get a dog of a 172. but a minter of a valver. But like you said, there few and far between!

can get a high mile but well looked after 172 for £3k, I'd get that. easier to live with as a daily runner, valver is miles miles miles more fun though... but getting dated now.

imo a valver's not much slower than a 172, my mates was (is) quicker than a 172 he had a run in with off here and it's completely standard, just a well maintained engine. As a rule the 172 will be quicker, but a strong engined valver shouldn't be much slower imo.

Handling I'd go with the valver, rawness and fun it wins too, just that most will have worn suspension and tired engines.

If your after a mint valver you could be holding out all day for one to come along, as you say they are getting on a bit now (remember that the last of the line ones are 12 years old now) You could get lucky thouh & find that someone puts theirs up for sale as soon you start looking.

Other than that see what 172's are available, you could probably get one in good condition for 3k.

I hear on the Renaultsport forum there is some bloke selling his Williams, which has only 9000 miles on the clock - might be worth a punt if it isn't megamoney??..

wont be cheap if the condition is like any other 9000 mile car... should be showroom condition in which case prepare to get bent over!

If i was goin with the MK1 again i would want to change all the components for the sus, all bushes etc.

A Nice stripped valver with breathing mods should see of a 172 then or at least be pretty even with them?

stripped mildly modded valver should yeah, think there's a lad on WC that did that and was running mid 14's. Most stock 172/182's run 15's and the quicker ones running high 14's

Nice one. I THINK i preffer the styling of the valver more than the 172 but unsure.

It would be a Ph1 172.

I think ill just save hard and see what comes up around the time.

Cheers for all the info so far.

:)

Williams were doing mid 14's...Must be a quick valver.

i don't think the valver is that quick! I monged one of the boys up here when my 172 was std! Was the 3rd day i owned it!

Pulled past even from standstill.

thats what im talking about!! Utter perfection in a Mk1.

owner has good taste, looks quite a bit like sdv

I've not driven a valver, but they are getting a tad old now. I suppose it depends on your initial budget, what you want to do to it and the insurance.

  Valver
A 172 would be a lot easier to live with generally and overall, but personally I'd take a valver if that stuff doesn't bother you too much. Could get a really really nice one in that budget obviously, and it would be more fun. Despite what people on here will say, some valvers are faster than 172s, they really do vary a lot. Out of the two at my house, one is fairly significantly faster than the other, the faster one having a higher mileage too, and then it's also significantly faster than my friend's one. And from the times I've 'tried it on' with a couple of 172/182s, I would slowly pull away on most. I dare say with some healthy suspension it would handle marginally better too.

As for looks and exclusivity it wins too; as far as I'm concerned the only two clios that really stand out and look the part are the 16v/Williams and the V6.

my bro's got one it's a 1.4 williams conversion,

think it's pushing past 170 bhp mark with just a little bit of engine work and aparantly it's makes a fool of his mates astra coupe turbo with over 200bhp.
depends what you prefer obviously the smaller car (mk1) can be an amazing little car if you want to put the work into it.

I'd have a valver I think.

Yeah its an older car, but imo they look better, I wouldn't expect there to be a great deal of difference between the two speeds/power wise. Much prefer the mk1.

I doubt I'd buy a Williams, too much money for a decent one when you think its a 15 year old car or whatever..

I still love the Mk1's but the age of the now I just don't think i'd ever get another one

I don't mind fixing mechanical issues but once you've got rust there's no way back and i'd be hard pushed to believe there is honestly a mk1 out there without any rust at all.

Buy my mk1 172 £2K ;)

sorry worded that a bit funny, yep it's just a 1.4 with a lump in it basically lol, got a williams engine, sports suspension, brakes etc, very fast but needs tidying up, he's a paint sprayer so when he gets round to it, it'll be a smashing lil car.

I know a guy selling 79,000 mile 172. For "sensible" offers around £3k. And no its not a dog, not by any means. It looks "exactly" like this;
