Result. Complained alot etc etc and they have put me up2 20mb BB for no extra costs.

Heres a question...can my old modem which looks like this ... handle the 20mb speed?

Nice! sounds like a fairly good result.
The modem will be able to handle anything theoretically. Its the cable that runs into and out of the modem that might not be able to handle the speed. It should be able to though.

My virgin internet seems to be running very slowly lately. Isnt looking too promising really.

Nowt to do with the cable.. some cable modems only have a 10mbit network port.

Post up the make/model..

Speed tests suck major league c**k. All I know is that I constantly get around 9.5mb from usenet and no down time at all. Not quite sure why that sucks but hey, we all have different experiences.

As an aside, are you using bit torrent? The upstream from that will kill your internet browsing unless you set an upstream cap.

Just tried that test out of interest. using the London server I get half those speeds, thus proving that speed tests are shite ;)

Yep it looks like it. Click here to find out if you need a new modem. Mine is fine so apparantly so I'll just keep restarting the modem once a day to see if I've been upgraded

I need a new modem so have ordered one from them for free today :) I think my area has been upgraded but from the list it's hard to tell for sure.

I see from the Virgin website that my area is now pencilled in as May for the 20mb upgrade. Awesome :approve:

Not really, cause with great power comes responsibility.. or more to the point.. with the faster line comes traffic management ;)

Dont you be one of those top 5% heavy downloaders who uses their cable modem for more than 27 minutes now !!!

internet was tits for me when i had it - bit of downtime on the swap over from blue yonder or NTL whoever it was but was spot on after that.

i think they have the same customer service people but they were spot on.

richard B wants it to be top dog so they'd do anything to make sure i was happy :)

even not charge me for a months internet bill because of 2days downtime!

We shall see. All that matters is that I get the same ammount of stuff in half the time. No one really knows how this traffic managing thing will effect people. It's not like anyone would rather stay on 10mb ffs ;) I won't be downloading any more or less than before, so there isn't a problem.

I would rather stay on unlimited 10mbit... :(

b3nje, those results are from work connections .. dunno bout The_0ne but im have 30 dedicated100mbit full duplex connections just for my servers.

The 20mb service is still unlimited. they will only control users who take the piss at peak times and kill it for everyone else. Which seems fair to me. We simply don't know how it will shape up so no point worrying IMO. If I can get the stuff I need in half the time then thats great. Anything else is greed. I download what I need, I dont just constantly hammer the connection. We shall see what happens to those who do :)

If you call using your full (paid for) connection speed for 27 minutes over a period of 8 hours a piss take...

All im saying is I dont need more than 10mbit although the increased upload speed will be nice.. although they also cut that down if you go over 3GB !

I believe the figures you're quoting are not realistic scenarios though. I'm sure most people will not have issues. Off peak, there are no restrictions at all for starters. I hear what you're saying, but I just don't think it will affect the majority of moderate users, and as I say, what I do get I'll get in half the time.

Do we know what the speed will be reduced to when you do over-use? Perhaps 5mb? Still very healthy. I'll just be considerate during peak hours and rape the full 20mb potential off-peak. Hardly a biggie?

Anyway, I will report back with my findings of the 20mb service :)

When someone is downloading a particularly large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the internet speed for other users who might just be checking their email or browsing online. So to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we sometimes moderate the speeds during peak times (4pm till midnight) for customers who are downloading an unusually large amount at these times.

That really does sound quite reasonable to me :)

My useage will be fairly similar to Roy so it'll not really bother me. All I need now is for my replacement modem to arrive and I'm ready to try out my new 20mb connection.

I think I need to download over 3gb during peak times before they will limit my speed.

Ouch - 1mb for 4 hours :(

EDIT: it will be throttled down to 5mb for 4 hours after you exceed 3GB between 16:00 & 00:00

Correct. I shall make sure I am sensible between 4pm and mnidnight then. I agree with what KDF is saying, but it really is not a big deal to watch your useage during peak times. Sure, totally unmonitored would be better, if that's the pay-off of having 20mb in the first place then that's fine by me :D
