Cani just delete "Windows.Old" ??

I've got all my old documents that i needed and stuff but there is like 200programs on there that wont work now and therer is no "add/remove" function...

Also..

When i've downloaded something and its about to install the screen goes balck then comes back on in the darker shade until you click "install" etc.

any way to stop that fade process??

To turn off the black fading when you want to do anything remotely advanced go to: Control Panel >> User accounts >> Select your account >> at the bottom of the list of things on that page should be " Turn User Account Control on or off", Click that >> Untick the box on next page >> Restart PC.


Add / Remove programs is still there its just called " Programs and Features ", again in control panel.

Yes. That directory is pretty much useless now. All it's doing is eating up disc space.

well...when it booted up from the CD it said "UPGRADE HAS BEEN DISABLED" and only let me do "clean install"...

yet i had a folder still called "Windows.old" with everything frm XP in

so far so good!

If you are not able to upgrade, I thought that meant you existing XP license was hooky/invalid?

Backup all your stuff, and then wipe the disk and do a clean install.

will save a lot of issues in the long term and will be much quicker.

to be fair i don't have a clue if it did a clean install or upgrade. i pressume it did an upgrade as windows.old folder was there.

when it came to sticking vista on, i couldnt choose upgrade, only clean install!

nevermind. works a dream and love how quick it hibernates and shuts down etc..

That's not really true actually.

By upgrading you could find that the existing drivers for chipset, audio, video etc. still work under Vista. With a clean install you will defo need to start afresh with all drivers, and you may encounter issues here. I would of course always recommend a clean setup, but for some users an upgrafe is the better choice.

But, and it's a failry big but...

Some users are definitely better off upgrading. Inexperienced users, and especially laptop users are far better off with an upgrade. Laptops often need all sorts of small apps, services and drivers for controlling card slots, hot buttons etc. etc. and it can take a fair bit of work to recover all these from the web after installing Vista. That's all after the bother of finding and reinstalling drivers for just about everything.

Very true

drivers are pain in the rear bottom.

One thing I love about dells is that you can just type in the tag number, and will list all the drivers / applications required for the Operating system you require
