You look through Vista's options, and despite being shipped with 'Defender', mine still lists as having no AV. Might be a giveaway that!

On a side note, put it on the laptop last night using a bodge to get FE890 drivers onto my SZ2, and all of it works - including my 3G Datacard which everybody seems to b**ch about saying they don't - I used my XP drivers, no bluescreens, no crash and works fine, I just can't use TMCC (which I don't anyway, because it was the cause of a lot of connection issues back some).

In Linux? Yea, I would.. I've heard it does an AWESOME job at stopping viruses.. at least, I've never had a virus with it installed, anyway :rasp:

Appologies please read the full article linked. Malicious Software (I would call a virus malicious last time I checked) and spyware removal.

So while not an anti-virus program per se, it is meant to be designed to remove malicious software and spyware.. so please do your research before commenting..

To be fair, Windows Defender is advertised as protecting against spyware, it doesn't mention viruses.

In fact if you check the site it says "spyware protection for free"

While not advertised as an anti-virus program it does have malicious software detection subroutines, and should at least identify problem files (read viruses)...

I don't know which is funnier.. The fact Defender managed to stop 16% of viruses even though it was never intended to or people clutching at straws to **** off Vista.. I think "webroot" are the ones who need to do some research before commenting. Ofcourse the fact they produce AV program's of their own and want some free publicity for their products wouldn't have anything to do with their "comments" would it.. Oh to be so naive..

Thats so weird, my stick of gum wasn't designed to do anti-virus neither.. but so far its blocking 100% of them.. :butt:

Wonders never cease.

I think you need to understand there is a difference between malicious code and viruses... If Microsoft built any AV into Vista they'd be hung, drawn and quartered. If they didn't build ANY defence at all into it then they'd be attacked by the media for being irresponsible.

Thats what im saying the went part of the way by trying to write software to detect viruses and spyware, but not do anything about it.. just let the user know so they would have to buy anti-virus software to get rid of it.

I would hazard a guess that MS is already planning to buy over a few more AV companies and make their own.. then charge you for the pleasure..

Just installed Vista Ultimate to kill some time this afternoon.

Oh dear, I can't find anything. Think I'll reboot back into XP until most the apps and admin things I need are available for Vista.

It's certainly pretty, pretty pointless though. At least you can right click the Windows icon and select Classic Menus.

No, in this instance it's a 32-bit application with a manifest so that theming is enabled.

Scrollbars initially appear themed correctly, but then randomly draw in an unthemed style in the wrong place, you click on the scrollbar and it goes themed again and jumps to a random place.

Same code under Vista 32 displays correctly. Nothing special with it either, just a normal window with normal scroll bars.

Microsoft seem incapable of getting the theming working correctly, because there are loads of situations in XP where it's broken and developers have to use really nasty work arounds to fix it.
