Vista Out Today

  Better than yours. C*nt.
In testing, the company said, the new Windows Defender program failed to block 84% of viruses

Erm.. It's not an anti-virus program.

I doubt Photoshop would fair well in blocking viruses either.

Well said.

Would you use GIMP to protect yourselves from viruses?

You look through Vista's options, and despite being shipped with 'Defender', mine still lists as having no AV. Might be a giveaway that!

On a side note, put it on the laptop last night using a bodge to get FE890 drivers onto my SZ2, and all of it works - including my 3G Datacard which everybody seems to b**ch about saying they don't - I used my XP drivers, no bluescreens, no crash and works fine, I just can't use TMCC (which I don't anyway, because it was the cause of a lot of connection issues back some).

In Linux? Yea, I would.. I've heard it does an AWESOME job at stopping viruses.. at least, I've never had a virus with it installed, anyway ;) :rasp:

Gah, I love being a fanboy again.. not done this for like 6/7 years!

I don't even use Linux on the desktop anymore either! :p

Appologies please read the full article linked. Malicious Software (I would call a virus malicious last time I checked) and spyware removal.

So while not an anti-virus program per se, it is meant to be designed to remove malicious software and spyware.. so please do your research before commenting..

  Not a Clio
Why not ? I could use a stick of gum and I still wouldnt get any viruses in linux..

Personally I use my desk lamp, it does an amazing job!

Edit: Think quoting is broken! Had to manually edit the quote as it was buggered.

^^ PMSL @ the quotes.. this forum is fucked..

While not advertised as an anti-virus program it does have malicious software detection subroutines, and should at least identify problem files (read viruses)...

After reading about Vista, I might get it on the new ClioSport server instead!

Bit of IIS, bit of SQL Express 2005, lovely? ;)

Haha..

I don't know which is funnier.. The fact Defender managed to stop 16% of viruses even though it was never intended to or people clutching at straws to **** off Vista.. I think "webroot" are the ones who need to do some research before commenting. Ofcourse the fact they produce AV program's of their own and want some free publicity for their products wouldn't have anything to do with their "comments" would it.. Oh to be so naive..

Thats so weird, my stick of gum wasn't designed to do anti-virus neither.. but so far its blocking 100% of them.. :butt:

Wonders never cease.

Course the fact that it WAS meant to detect malicious code (read viruses) and flag them up (not clean or delete them) is another matter..

I think you need to understand there is a difference between malicious code and viruses... If Microsoft built any AV into Vista they'd be hung, drawn and quartered. If they didn't build ANY defence at all into it then they'd be attacked by the media for being irresponsible.

Tell me honestly how they win?

Thats what im saying the went part of the way by trying to write software to detect viruses and spyware, but not do anything about it.. just let the user know so they would have to buy anti-virus software to get rid of it.

I would hazard a guess that MS is already planning to buy over a few more AV companies and make their own.. then charge you for the pleasure..

Oh and just for the record.. defender missed the 15 most malicious peices of code on the web today.

Just installed Vista Ultimate to kill some time this afternoon.

Oh dear, I can't find anything. Think I'll reboot back into XP until most the apps and admin things I need are available for Vista.

It's certainly pretty, pretty pointless though. At least you can right click the Windows icon and select Classic Menus.

I'm dual booting as I know most things aren't going to work.

Just bodging the Windows 2003 Admin pak to work under Vista!!

I hate to say it, but there's a few things I do like. Plus it simplifies some things which a lot of users here seem to have problems with....like the difference between a shared folder and security on a folder!!

Ok. So I installed Vista 32 and Vista 64 today at work.

Took about 30 minutes before I found a bug (in x64) in the theming when running a 32 bit app.

The security stuff is uber crap.

Bug? The theming will always go to a default if there's no instructions or something else is wrong. Sure it's not a bug in the app?

However, the 64-bit version is s'posed to be a bit of a no-no atm unless it's the business versions.

No, in this instance it's a 32-bit application with a manifest so that theming is enabled.

Scrollbars initially appear themed correctly, but then randomly draw in an unthemed style in the wrong place, you click on the scrollbar and it goes themed again and jumps to a random place.

Same code under Vista 32 displays correctly. Nothing special with it either, just a normal window with normal scroll bars.

Microsoft seem incapable of getting the theming working correctly, because there are loads of situations in XP where it's broken and developers have to use really nasty work arounds to fix it.

Seems Microsoft have broken at least 2 API calls in Vista.

SetScrollInfo doesn't behave correctly for themed MDI Child windows in 32 bit apps running under Vista 64, works correctly under Vista 32.

AnimateWindow is utterly broken and doesn't redraw windows lower in the Z order. (both 32 and 64 bit versions)

Microsoft f**king morons.

Be afraid. If they've broken those 2 things, god knows what else is wrong with the pile-o-crap!

i just installed Home Premium Vista, and so far the only problem i have come across is, when ever i close IE 7 it thinks its crashed and re-opens it. Extremely annoying!!

not gonna buy/get vista for a fair few months/years yet until they sort out some of the bugs/security issues

LOL, but when they sort out those bugs/security issues, there will be more bugs/security issues, so why wait?

Got my copies of Vista Ultimate Retail and Office 2007 Ultimate Retail courtesy of MS Technet on Wednesday.

High five to that Griff we got them a few weeks ago now.

Usually they come with 5 Licenses but Vista came with 10. So we half inched 5 of them LOL

the same reason why the trophy is a better car over a FF172

its all relative. just as the current version of XP is better than the 1st retail version
