Vista problem help!

I've just got a nice new laptop after my old one vandalised itself, and have to say im very impressed.

Anyway, it came preloaded with vista and ive only ever used xp before.

It all looks very pretty but i think in some ways theyve gone backwards with the way stuff is laid out and operates. The whole windows defender thing that asks you if your really wanted to do what you just clicked everytime you do anything is massively annoying but i can put up with it.

One problem though, i wanted to extract something from winzip to my program files, and it wouldnt let me. Winzip's error report says that access is denied. Had the same problem on a few other things too.

I'm logged in as an administrator so whats the problem? is it something to do with defender?

Itried unchecking the read only bit on program files but it just reverts back whenever i do it.

anyone help?

Not too sure about the Winzip issue as I only use Vista's built-in zip facility. However, I recommend that you disable UAC (the annoying message that asks you to confirm everything you do). To do so go to the Control Panel and then double click on User Accounts. At the bottom click on the link "Turn User Account Control On or Off" and turn it off. This may well resolve the Winzip issue.

Just for information, the reason WinZIP was having a hissy fit when extract to the Program Files folder is because UAC (User Account Control) limits what can be written to certain folders. In some cases it prevents games from creating a save game file etc.
