Vista vs XP

  ?
I was so against vista for the longest time, until about 3 days ago when my laptop arrived and i formatted it with vista business.

Once you tweak the os and turn off some features to make vista less "annoying"... it is a million times better than xp. Seems to fly in terms of speed and generally its nice to use.

From a home user point of view I would say I am leaning towards Vista, business use would have to be hands down XP, but thats more because I am familiar with it in a Domain environment

i upgraded my insprion 6400 to vista, and havent looked back since. Excellent piece of kit.

plus the battery life improved

imo, vista sucks a lot...i have it on my toshiba satellite a 100 notebook, use it for stupid stuff like surfing and playing some games, some photoshop, and it never fails to freeze, to slow down, or to just plain old act stupidly...

xp any day...

I have used all the Windows Operating Systems and think Vista has great potential. There are some good utilities never seen on previous O/S such as XP. I personally work in IT and manage computer networks and am happy we are currently not supporting Vista. There are some teething issues, some of which will be ironed out when Service Pack 1 is released.
Security is a selling point, as long as you dont mind Microsoft deleting software on your PC/laptop (without your permission!).
I only run Vista so I can get used to it, but have decided to format my PC and build it to run a dual boot (XP and Vista) this weekend.
No pleasing some folk eh?

Has it occurred to you that the A100 is slightly under the 'optimal' spec for Vista?

My SZ2 has a couple of issues with Vista, but it's still very usable and it only has issues when you really push it. (But then, I also know what I'm doing with a computer - read into that what you will)

I ran it briefly on my new Quad core machine - had to format it and stick 2003 Enterprise on there for work testing purposes but prior to that, running Vista on it was fantastic - nothing broke, it was very quick and it looked brilliant. Also ran it on a Dell Precision M65 and it was fine too.

I think Vista's biggest enemy is the twit that sticks the disk in, watches it install and then hasn't a clue what he's actually doing and when he's got to sort out the drivers for it, makes a complete mess of it.

The only problems I found with Vista is that some software/hardware wont work straightaway and you have to download new software for it which can be a pain

Suprisingly, no matter how much i like XP...

Vista is a lot better...get over the very minute compatability issues that still float around and its top notch

COME ON YOU MAC BOYS, CONVERT

We've got Vista Business on 4 of the PC's here and I hate the bloody thing, XP isn't bad but I miss Windows 2000.

I fecking hate Windows 2000 now, every is moving on and Windows 2000 is a fly in the ointment IMO

Most of our company still uses W2K SP4, and it's completely solid, there is absolutely nothing wrong with W2K SP4 at all, solid NT platform.

I use XP Pro SP2 on my but for no good reason, all the pretty colours are disabled in favour of a W2K look and feel. Principally XP is just W2K mind, all based on NT and barring some new menu's and options there's not a lot more it offers in the way of business requirements.

The only reason we're currently upgrading our platform is because as a publishing firm our deisgners and editors (those who don't use MAC) need to upgrade to XP to use the newest Suitcase and CS3 suite. For 90% of our users though XP+O2K3 just equals confusion...so much so I've had to run training classes, which is infuriating.

Summary:

W2K = Fine
XP = Fine
Vista = Not mature enough, will be 2 SP's before I touch it again.

ME was truly shocking, why on earth the brought it out I have no idea! :S lol

Our servers are still on 2K server, probably why I prefer it, saying that i've got XP on my PC ;)

Hm i'd not be running servers on W2K anymore, W2K3 is MUCH better for servers a lot more customisable and integrates a lot better with server tools. W2K3 is a better option no doubt.

ME was indeed a piece of sh1te, I upgraded my PC to it years ago from 98 and wished I hadn't. Never seen so many BSOD in my life, had to reformat it twice in as many weeks. Back to 98.

Seriously though guys.. from someone who hates windows with a passion..

Use XP !

Its more mature and has most of the serious bugs ironed out. Its tried and tested ! Give vista another year or two.. or better yet..

install linux.

vista seems to have alot of similar things to OSX, but OSX came out donkey years ago:rasp:

MACS RULE!!!

imo vista is great, much faster than xp, 1 niggle tho;

media player is integrated into the os, and cant be installed a seperate app.

my copy of vista managed to completely forget what media player is, it all went up the ar5e and the oly way to fix it was a reinstall.

back to xp pro tll my quad core machine is built me thinks.

and seriously, about the gaming, the difference is about about a 10% frame drop, if that.

(mind you i run a 1950XT so thats no big deal, lol)

Vistas running fine on my pc and I recommend it as its quicker, runs all my programs and games fine - even old ones like Quake 3. Only thing Im not keen on is the ram usage and that it doesnt like some hardware (I got 64bit Ultimate). So if you do upgrade make sure your pc is good and has lots of ram and check if all your hardware will work on it and it will be fine :)

horses for courses imho. I personally run XP pro + Ubuntu. At work we use XP Pro + w98 (yup thats right) 1 2k3 server and 1 ubuntu mail server. I had the opportunity to get the last few machines with vista on and id rather use w98 tbh. Im sure its a wonderful OS if you can afford to waste vast amounts of resources mostly ram to have pretty colours and effects. Sure they will be new feautes which will be some use but its still an M$ product and as a result will be riddled with flaws. Businesses dont want to have to dick about just to get basic programs and drivers to work so will be a fir while yet till its introduced here

IIRC I think banks have just moved to XP from 98 lol..

But I guess thats the norm for high security financial organisations.

Everyone saying Vista is "faster" how have you gauged this.

I am running a Dual Core system with plenty of RAM and I cant say it runs faster

probably a good thing else hackers would have stolen all the money and the economy would be down the toilet due to all the holes in XP which were there at launch
