Right, The origional motiv for me using vmware was so i could use it to emulate workstations and maybe a server, so i dont have to modify my own PC. Im at college and ive only been networking so to speak since september. A lot of Job Advertisements have VMWare on their "wishlists" along with citrix and Novell, although i know ill start very small id still like to get an insight as to how things work.

Im using workstation. Clearly.

Will i be able to install a few Desktops and maybe 2 servers in workstation to save me the hastle of using another version?

Ive got a Guide on using server 03, so thats sorted but ill end up asking for help i rekon.

I'd get VMware Server. It's cheaper (free) and offers similar functionality, just a bit more complicated IMO.

A lot of job advertisements have VMware on their wishlists, but they don't usually mean the toys - they want ESX experience. For that you'll want to try bodge it onto a laptop...

ESX is now free under the ESXi guise, the new version is 3.5i.... I installed it the other day and it seems pretty good...they have removed the console function so its more "appliance"..... Im doing a lot of work with Sun VDI's at present, and so Im trying to set up a little x86 solaris environment at home to do testing...only problem is the server I have is too loud to have in my living room (where my wired network is located) and ESX doesnt appear to support wireless adaptors (which makes sense)....trying to hang a wireless bridge off the back of the server at present but its now working very well

agreed, (yes i know, I am actually agreeing )

And as said, when companies say they want vmware experience, they don't really mean the free downloads, they mean VCP level (vmware certified professional) i'd imagine which means you are very proficient with the product. Its quite a big product when you use it properly (ESX that is).

well i don't believe it supports USB for one so that would be your main problem.
