Volvo S40

  R5gtt, 182, volvo...
Thought I'd update my woes in here as its about the only Volvo thread..

Had dpf woes and later developed/discovered some overboost issues, after checking all the solenoid and sensors I used some innotec turbo cleaner on the turbo after stripping off the downpipe.. Seems to have solved the issue at the moment after a test drive, normally it would just go like a stabbed rat and then cut power.

Fingers crossed..

If you have any similar issues, the product could be worth a punt, I'll update with its progress if/when it fails again later tonight

This is it... I actually read all about vw's and VNT turbos vanes coking up, they were using Mr Muscle and a few owners more than once due to owning the car a few years..

The build up in my engine was disgusting, I suspect the turbo was bad.. The cardboard template in the kit wasn't a great fit due to the volvos round fitting, but I jammed it in and filled the turbo with the cleaner.. Worked the actuator arm with a pry bar over an hour or 2 and then clean it out with the 2nd cleaner, (basically brake cleaner)

My sh1tbox.. I really wanted the suspension package but it's taken me for so much money I'll just run it..

Rocking the cream leather.. I had to wear a cardigan or the guy wouldn't let me test drive it.

Did a few more things on the Volvo. When I changed the shocks and springs I noticed the top mounts were knackered. Unfortunately I didn't have new ones to fit so I re-used the old ones but ordered new ones promptly. I also ordered new top mount covers for peace of mind as I didn't want to remove them again, although it took very little time due to it being fresh in my mind and everything had been copper greased.

Gave the wheels a clean while they was off. They are like new with no curbing or anything on them  Also bought some new wheel nuts all round as they had some silly ones on there before that I didn't like so I swapped these all over.

Once that was done I took it to be aligned. Unfortunately the steering was straight, so I re-took it back so they could do it again, and also added some wheel weights as I was getting a bit of vibration. The vibration has gone but the wheel is still slightly off center. It's only a small difference and I don't know if I can be arsed to take it back a third time due to both times waiting 2hrs.

All new standard headlight bulbs (H7, HB3 and 501) have been ordered to as I'm going to remove the HID kit.

That's pretty much it now I think, barring the NSF cv boot rubber and a bearing while, which I think is the rear. I have to draw a line on the spending on this car as I'll be trying to sell it.

Car has just had a new genuine battery fitted and the software reinstalled as it decided to go and not recognise any of my keys. I thought it was the infamous antenna ring, but after taking it to a Volvo specialist (which was very local and I never knew existed)he diagnosed it as the software.

Been back to normal since, but the CD changer doesn't recognize or eject my disks anymore. Very odd. The radio/aux still works as it should though

@Dr Jekyll how are you finding the B4/Eibach set up? Been looking at the same for my V50.

How much did the top mounts set you back, if you don't mind me asking?

@Nyall The setup is great. Would 100% recommend the setup. It's great and rather cheap too if you get it from "partsforvolvo" online. I paid £400 for the both all-round and that includes delivery which arrived in 3 days. It looks oem as rides great too.

I bought the top mounts from eBay for a little under £40 for the pair, but I did buy the cover for them too, which didn't really need to be bought. Parts for Volvo sell the top mounts for £20 for the pair.

Yeah, I've been using Parts for Volvos to price up the parts and as suspension goes it is a fairly cheap upgrade, probably alot cheaper than genuine Volvo stuff!

Well this month will be two front wheel bearings and next month will be Billies, Eibachs, top mounts and spring caps.

Has your ride height settled any lower since fitting them? No problems with scraping over anything?

Absolutely no problems with scraping whatsoever. I think it's settled a bit, probably is 25mm but looks oem still. Well more oem+ actually.

I took some more pics today so I'll chuck them in here once I've uploaded them. Yeah parts for Volvo are a great company to deal with. Spoke to the chap on the phone who was very helpful and as I said they are cheap and parts arrived quickly. In fact, I priced new shocks and springs from euro car parts and it was £80 more than this setup! I guess some people get put off by "lowering springs" but it drives/feels so smooth you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I think I have a rear wheel bearing that's started to go. Getting a small whine. Don't think I'm going to get it done though as its more expense, and I'm trying to sell it. Need to draw a line somewhere.

The S40/V50 Sport comes with Eibach springs as standard iirc, so I'd imagine the ride height would be similar to a sport pack'd car, probably the same springs!

Carparts4less (Euro Car Parts' cheaper sister company) have SKF rear wheel bearings/hubs for £86 (there's probably a discount code floating around too) if you decide to change them. Really easy job too, only 3 bolts holding the hubs on, no need for a press.

Rear bearing on my v50 wasn't the push out the old one affair I would have expected...

It wasn't hard, just way more labour intensive as I think it was almost a hub unit, not just a bearing in a disk like my hot hatches.

I'm pretty sure that I did read that the hubs was easier to change than the bearings themselves. Problem is guys, I reckon I'm close to have spent £1500 in 4 months on it and I haven't owned it 6 months yet!

Actually the guy on the PFV place did say that they would put lower it as much as the sports, as mine is a normal 2.0ltr TD. I'm happy with how it looks now.

Yeah the Volvo's bearings are incorporated into the hub, rather than the brake disc. You can't buy a lose bearing, you have to buy and replace the whole hub.

Pretty straight forward job though, literally jack the car up, wheel off, caliper off, unplug ABS sensor, disc off, then undo the three bolts on the hub and the hub comes off, then new hub on and put everything back together.

Not as simple as just replacing the rear disc like on the Clio, but in total it's only 10 bolts to undo, including the wheel bolts.

Cheers Tom. Currently writing up a for sale advert now but i've never done one before! I dont know where to start!

I just want it gone as being on here doesn't help my want for another 182!

Cheers Ste. Having had one now, i wouldn't have one again with my distance of driving. With the current distance i do i thought id be better off but i dont think i am. Brilliant on long journeys, but i dont do enough to warrant the diesel, although this is a lovely car to be in when i do! First diesel i've owned, but i do prefer petrol. I think diesels are only needed for a lot of motorway driving. Thats where they are at home i think.

Same here dude. I bought a Leon diesel which was a nice car in its own right, but I couldn't wait to get back in a petrol!

Looks great @Dr Jekyll and you wouldn't look at it and think it's been lowered, very subtle drop but suits it perfectly.

GLWS, very good ad actually, very detailed!

One thing I would suggest, has it had the cambelt done? If it has then add that into the advert. The cambelt on these 2.0D's are due every 96k/10 years, something to bear in mind!

Thanks guys. Nice to hear positive comments, especially when it's something quite important like a for sale advert, especially as I've never done one before.

I'm unsure if I've priced it right. I bought it for £4125 in October with 84k on it. As you can see in here I've had a lot done in such a short amount of time, but with the issues it has (some people I spoke to think they are small issues, but I worry) I'm worried that it might be too high? Unsure if the prices have dropped that much in 6 months.

Thanks for that Nyall. I'll have a check on the previous receipts to see when it was done.

Have you got it advertised on Auto Trader etc? I would personally leave the price where it is, for now.

If people show interest, and make you an offer then they will low ball you, it's human nature as everyone wants a good deal. You want to compensate for this, so keep the price on the higher side.

If nobody shows any interest after a while then lower the price accordingly mate.

I know, I was just worried that it might be too high and put people off. I guess you got to find that 50/50. It is advertised for £4000 and will be everywhere but here, which I'll advertise a bit cheaper for CS members as I always do for things I sell.

It's currently on here and on priority on gumtree (paid to have it at top of page, etc). Autotrader wanted £45/60 for 3/6 weeks. May do that next weekend.

Today the Volvo changed hands.

Had a bit of interest on here and Gumtree. My plan was to add it on AT when i got a message from a member on here. He noticed that i wanted to P/X for a 1*2. He had one that he was trying to sell as he wanted a diesel. Basically our situations was the same, but reversed. Many PM's were exchanged from both parties being, both very informative and a few calls too. We settled on a deal which included he's car including the modified parts, spare and original parts, plus cash my way for the Volvo. Today we met and the deal was secured. The owner Jamie couldn't have been a more genuine person and im happy with the new car, as he is too.

Am going to miss this on long runs:

However, they always come back
