W-reg ph1 172, which decat?

Hi guys, currently own a ph1 172 on a W. Seems to have two cats under the car, so im assuming I need 2 decat pipes and how will I tell if its one or two lamdas?

  Ph 1 172
It's one cat not two. Just order the 172 decat from NW performance mine was a single lambda sensor cat but I fitted a decat with 2 sensor holes, I just needed to buy a bung.

If it's a w-reg it should be a single lambda sensor cat. You can tell because there will be no sensor just after the cat just before it joins the mid section.

it IS 2 cats, but you only need one decat pipe. you'll need to look closer and see if you have an after-cat lambda sensor or not. There is a difference in length between the 2 exhausts. All good after market exhaust systems have adjustment at the end that joins the cat to account for this

Thought the early ph1's were single box, later spec ones twin type :S

As for the decat, Janspeed silenced is good.

i was told not to bother decatting it, apparently the ph1 cat is free flowing anyway, so pointless fitting a decat, ur not going to see any gains. spend your money on matched inlets instead, the ph1 casts are rubbish so you will see more gains with inlets.

The first 172's were single cats,i know because i had to change it to a twin from my later 172 when i changed my wiring harness over.

About a month and it already needs a new dephaser!

That's a pain in the backside....at least you will have the knowledge that all the belts and dephaser has been done :)

I had to get the gearbox replaced 2 months after ownership :dead:

change over model are often made with random parts so you can sometimes get a bit of everything, really annoying when your wanting to do a engine swap

How i understood it:

Early ph1 172's had the single silenced type box with one lambda

Next was a twin barrel cat with single lambda

The last in the line ph1's, twin cat and twin lambda

Twin barrel cat all through the life of the ph1 mate especially from the start. Some later ones had the 2 sensors and the odd few towards the end may have had single cats but that may have only been the time during swap over to the new shape.
