Warranty Help...

Hi all.... just wanted to see where I stand on this. Took my car into Renault the other day because it wouldnt start. It turned out to be the TDC sensor. The cars 25-26 months old. With 14k on the clock. I walked out with a bill for £233 ... should my car have a 3 year warranty? it is an import... if the warranty has run out does £233 for a TDC sensor sound expensive?

I have no idea what a TDC sensor is BUT...

All cars have 3 year warranty - EVEN imports. You may have to argue but they HAVE to honour the warranty. EU law or something from memory.

Reading it...my opinion would be its something that should be covered by warranty, its just a little sensor though an important one (obviously) and I THINK it may be difficult to get to from what I have read in the last 30 seconds!

The TDC Sensor is used to determine ignition timing while the engine is cranking-over and starting up. It tells the ECU that a piston is at TDC, but the ECU doesnt know which one yet. The CYL Sensor tells the ECU where the number one piston is. Once the ECU gets the CYL input, it has a reference for the TDC input, so it can determine which cylinder is at TDC and when.

When the engine is running, the Crank Sensor takes over from the TDC sensor and its input is used by the ECU to determine spark timing and fuel injection timing as well as rpm. If the Crank sensor reports an abnormal crank angle, then the ECU will ignore it and use the TDC sensor.

Ok Maybe I should send Renault UK an email... the guy at who gave me the bill said all imports only come with a 12 month warranty!

my tdc sesor on my 172 was done under warranty but it was a uk car

EU cars have a 3yr warranty.

However, quite a few imports came from Cyprus/similar and they were not part of the EU until May 1st 2004.

Therefore you car may have only had a 2yr warranty etc.

dont you have to apply for the warranty though?
