Water in The Engine Electronics??

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Hello,

I seem to have a problem with water getting in between some electrical connection in the engine.

A couple of months ago the electrical light came on whilst on the motorway in the wet. The power went and I believe it went into "limp mode".

I took it to Renault as it would only start everynow and then and they opened up some connection and cleaned out some silicon/water from a certain connection, however commented that a cover was missing and this is why the water gets into the connection.

The connection is just behind the engine but I cannot identify which one it is now?

Please advise.

Thanks

Sam

is it the one that should have the pointlessly heavy metal cover that falls off?

if so with the cover fitted it tents to chafe through the wires.... you should see it directly behind the engine...

As you look at the back of the engine (right at the back, last thing attached to it) you should see 2 block plugs on a computer, covered by a metal cover. Sam stick your hand between the bulkhead and the engine, its in the gap so to speak.

There the 2 block plugs that fill with water, although Renault in there wisdom fill the connectors with silicon, which has the same effect. :S Best way to clean the crap out is with a bit of electrical cleaner and a compressed air blaster. If you've still got the cover on it can be a bit of a git to get off.

i would clean it up... and refit the cover.. with some carefully placed felt to stop it cutting through the wires.. or make yourself a better cover...

I think the problem is the cover has been taken off by the previous owner?

Can I just dry it with a hair dryer? I don't have an air compressor or electrical cleaner...

Can I just tape up the connection as realistically I am not going to want to disconnect it on a regular basis...

Thanks

Sam

If the covers rubbed through and the wirings chaffed I'd just gob loads of electrical tape round the loom to stop it happening agian. It'd be ideal if you could waterproof it but before you do make sure you get all the moisture out. WD40s good at protecting from water, and getting rid of it.
