Waterproof Tape On New Paint

Okay, so the BMW comes back from the spray shop on Friday.

It won't have windows for at least a few weeks.

I have a car cover to keep it dry, but as an added precaution, I was thinking about taping the windows up with some plastic sheeting and gaffer/waterproof tape.

My question; is the tape likely to cause damage/marking/anything unwanted to the fresh paint?

The paint will literally be a few days old, so brand new!

I personally wouldn't want to risk it, what about a polytene sheet from B&Q put over the entire car and taped to the wheels / under side of the car avoiding any tape on the paint.

That way its just like a second car cover just incase.

My car cover does exactly that though, it's more for when I work on the car, if it's raining and I'm under the gazebo, it'll stop any mist/splashes getting into the car and onto the (exposed) loom.

What about a roll of cling film ? You can buy industrial roles which are pretty big just wrap it round the top half of the car?

Do not put anything on the paint, i wouldnt even put plastic sheeting for long periods, a car cover will literally ruin the finish as it will move around in the wind, and will most likely press into the paint if you put it on tight. Personally id leave it "weeks" (its an unknown and depends on the lacquer used) in these temperatures before id put anytning on it, as you really dont know how well it will be cured when you get it back, its very much lacquer and application depth dependent. If you need it to be water tight then tape the windows only where it is hidden by a seal or something......

I'd love to be able to leave it for weeks, but it really isn't an option. The garage isn't big enough for the car, so a car cover is my only option unfortunately.

A car cover will surely scratch like hell as above?

Unless you get one of those ones that pumps air into it and around the car so no part of the cover touches the paint?

True. Could go ott on pegs and securing lines.

Could hire out a local storage garage for a few weeks.

Theres a block of garages near me, council rent them for 6.80 a fortnight. Dads recently done this for his new bike he doesnt have room for yet.

Yep, I have a gazebo, but in the recent weather it would get torn down and do more damage than the car cover.


The cover will be raised off the car with (wait for it) sponges. I'll use new sponges in various places to keep the cover away from the paint. Sounds mental I know, but its literally my only option.


Cant rent a garage because most of them are stupid money around here, and also I want to be able to come home from work and tinker with the car, something I won't be able to do if its in a garage 15 miles away.
