Welsh Driving routes, photo locations, places to go.

  Fiesta ST-3
Right guys

Within the regions section I will now be collating driving roads, photo locations and places to go in the car within Wales. Obviously I know a few i have driven myself, and that are local to me. What I don't know are all of them out there.

So this is where you come in. If you know a good driving route, photo location etc could you please get in touch with me so that I can get it up in the region section. Any route/location submitted to me will be edited to fit a standard formate but if you could include the following within you message to me.

Driving route

Place Name
Location
The route
Distance
Fun level 1-10
A picture of somewhere along the route
A google map of the route itself
A brief description of the route.

Photo Location

Place name
Location on google maps
Pictures of location
Brief description of location.

Any location put up will be credited to the person submitting it to me. I will get some done later to give you an idea.

Thoughts?

Well the idea is to get as many up as possible so that everyone can share them. So like said if either of you know any routes or photo locations, fire the info across to me and I will get more done.

I like the clio in the Brecon pictures ;)

I've got some more photos of the A4069 if you want to use them?

I'll be heading up there in a few weeks for some top down action.

Im too lazy to write anything else but it's well worth a visit.
This is a beautiful place but it's a nightmare in terms of access. No offence intended mate as I agree - it's a great place... but more than a few cars and there will be major problems I think. I went there on a car meet a couple of years back and from what I remember it is a single lane to/from the venue with not many passing places and a lot of traffic... I'm just thinking from a safety point of view to be honest. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong however! LOL! Great suggestion all the same. :D

I definitely want to hit that Preseli road!

I've got lost on the way back from the West Midlands (I think) to Aberystwyth before, I ended up in the Elan Valley, there was a very nice driving road there. I went on it once more as well, where I tried to get lost again just to find it, coming off the A44 :p

The Road is approximately from Rhayader, Powys to Devil's Bridge area, Aberystwyth. It involves the B4574 and B4518

Maps URL: http://g.co/maps/9majt (approximate route, from memory)

The actual road I'm on about is probably about 17 miles, if you don't go all the way to Devil's Bridge. I can't remember the exact route I took, it took a while to pop out somewhere where I recognised! The route I've plotted here may actually be wrong, I seem to remember being closer to water and for longer.

I haven't got a lot of personal information about it and don't know what the best routes around are, but it involves driving near a big dam and has some excellent scenery. I saw it featured in Evo magazine a while back and though "ah, I recognise that!".

The rhigos mountains, aberdare... Would take photos but too scared to go up there again :D driving on a cliffside? No thanks! However the M4 is pretty flat and a good sight spotting area with the odd lambo passing by!;) and what about mubmles? Braclet bay is pretty much deserted, haha.

Here is an update to my Elan Valley post with an accurate route map which I tested on Saturday! And a review.

I discovered the B4574 road (Mid-West Wales) for myself while lost at some point last year, I decided to revisit the road again today! The roads were dry in places, but conditions were a bit damp and cold, so I'll have to revisit in a month or two!

The drive that I went on and would highly recommend starts from the Renault garage in Aberystwyth, heading out on the A4120 to Devil's Bridge, then just before reaching Devil's Birdge you take the B4574 through Cwmystwyth to the Elan Valley where you finally get on 'Route 81' according to Google maps :p. The distance was about 27 miles one way.

I took some photos but since I only had a mobile phone with no zoom and was with a non car enthusiast (dunno why I invited them along really), I only took a few otherwise I'd have had a better selection of road shots to upload.

The B4574 / valley part of the route excellent drive with lots of winding roads, dips along with some excellent views and parts of easy to view open road. Due to having to go a bit slow on a lot of the route for safety (the bends are still fun though), one of the highlights is actually the return journey, re-joining the A4120 where you are thankful to be back on normal sized roads but still have some nice scenery and some fun corners with a couple of oppurtunities for overtaking manoeuvres.

Surprised to see no mention of the A4059 Penderyn road into the Beacons...

http://g.co/maps/tnvvg

http://g.co/maps/svadr

Relatively short, but absolutely epic on a bright clear day.

Another one which isn't so well known is the minor Road following the ancient Roman Road 'Sarn Helen' from Ystradfellte to Heol Senni http://g.co/maps/crmk6

http://g.co/maps/9ccbg

http://g.co/maps/7qdm2

Another minor Road between Trecastle and Ynyswen at the top of the Swansea Valley http://g.co/maps/4g3pk

I'll think of a few more when I get a chance...

I'm in Wales this week, and figured I'd check this thread.

So thanks to the above, I took a trip up the A4059, lovely road, followed by Snowdonia.

Epic day, Cheers guys.

It's a shame I can't get time off work, Alex. Otherwise I'd have loved to take you around some of my favourite roads around Wales. Maybe another time! LOL! :) Glad you had a great day though; we are blessed with some lovely driving roads around here.

I'll certainly love to take you up on that offer sometime!

I certainly want to go back, I missed soo much.

Yesterday I did the Evo triangle, two laps and I loved it.

I'd also suggest the B4520 from Brecon to Builth Wells, lovely road, inc awesome views!
