Wet Sanding?

Can I be honest Tommy?

You don't. At least not on your own car. This really does require skill. It is actually quite easy (as it sounds, it's just like sanding wood) but it is just as easy to c**k it up.

Have a really good read of the above, then get a practise panel, get good at doing it, then apply what you've learnt to your car.

I thought about saying don't bother. But most people get on their high horse and presume its easy. Or think they can do it by hand with some sandpaper and 'elbow grease'.
If you're of the mind set that you can attack your cars paintwork with wet and dry paper without ever doing it on anything else first, you're either an idiot, or you cant have a very expensive car....

Sorry to sound harsh, if that comes across like it.

However, if you are looking to do it properly, do the relevant research, buy the correct products/equipment and then practice on a scrap panel. That link I posted gives you an idea of the stages to look for, i.e. fill the scratch, let it dry (for a few days) attack with a fine wet/dry paper, then machine polish.

(edit - just read you are looking to practice. good luck mate)

You have to learn somewhere buddy and, quite frankly, good on you for trying.

This is also a point I forgot, do you have a machine polisher?

Correcting wet sanding by hand would be bloody hard, And i wouldn't attempt it, I went blind into wet sanding, Only used very soft paper, i.e. 2500 and 3000.

Had some very good results but had a rotary polisher and all the right polish.

Definatly do more reading to get an idea of how to use the equipment and practice on scrap panels if you can.

You can.

Tommy, I really wouldn't go near this buddy.

To help you, help me - post a pic of said issue area and I can offer advice.

Yeah give us an image and we can offer beter advice mate. If you didn't know what a machine polisher was then wet sanding isn't a good idea to be honest.

As above, if you don't know what a machine polisher is, give wet sanding a wide berth!

Wet sanding and machine polishing itself is actually quite easy, but then I have been 'cleaning' cars properly for about 10 years.

On the flip side, if you go into it blind like a bull in a china shop, you will end up going through the laquer and paying someone to respray your car!!

I imagine you with a dirty sponge washing cars one day then you talk about machine polishing the next!

I don't use dirty sponges!!!

(I actually use a brush...)

But should the need arise, I have no issues wet sanding and/or machine polishing a whole car. Thankfully my hobby is my job! ;)
