What car next Clio/saxo/106!!

need a bit of advice/opinions....

dont want to spend more than £3,500, pref as little as poss.

Already had a willy 3 so dont want another (like to try as many cars as possible)

The choice:

1) MK1/2 Clio 1.8 16v

2) Peugeot 106 GTi

3) Peugeot 306 Gti-6

4) Citroen Saxo VTS

Car is for general running round in - and the wife may even want to drive it some times

....whats the best option do you think?

1) As you have had a Williams, I probably would get something different.

2) Nice.. Looks good..

3) I looked at these, but they are very - boring looking (standard)? But, leather/suede interior, Air Con, 6 Gears.. nice.. and as quick as the Williams in a straight line according to Evo.

4) Saxo VTS.. not bad..

Craigs Idea) Damn good.. Heh.. but you gotta have a big bank balance!



I would say the 306 or 106 S/Cd.. hehehe.

agreed ^^ the GTi-6 is pretty quick and with a few choice mods can be rapid, but when you S/C a 106 GTi they become a new animal, MUCHO RAPIDO

Well, looking on forums.. people seem to be quite disappointed with the performance of SCing their 106/VTS.. dunno why.. but it doesnt make as much power as it should?

Costs about £4k.. heh.

If you like different cars get something actually different, i.e RWD, or turbocharged, mid engined..whatever.

go for the 106, get a group n peugeot sport zorst, sealed IK and it will fly. add on some cams and re-map and you will get to around 150bhp. loose some weight to get below 900kg and you will have a pocket rocket!

i got a 97gti for £2800 and it is v good condition and i much prefer it to my old 172!

If anyones interested Ive got a Saxo VTS im looking to sell Black W reg 2000 high miles 75,000 but full citroen service history mostly motorway miles since ive had it just serviced new cambelt tyres. up for £3850. just bought a 182 and the trade in price quoted was insulting so thought Id sell it privately. J

If you liked the Willy then you may want to avoid a 16V as itll be 90% of what you had before and itll make you want another Willy!

Id give the Pug 306/106 GTis a try. The Saxo VTS is of course almost identical. Just dont expect them to be mint - as I found when I almost bought a 106 GTi.

they dont make a mk2 1.8 16v.

..and my choice wudnt be a valver (seeing as u already have a williams) id get a 306 gti-6 as it wud a alot different being a bigger car.

The saxo handles really well, at the moment Id say i prefer it to the 182 but thats probabley just done to having not done enough miles in the 182. saxo handles like a go kart and I think the damping is definately better you can feel the road perfectly with out the kick back you get in the 182 particularly on fast B roads. I remember reading an article in autocar think it was best handling car for under £15k and the saxo game 4th out of twenty first was the MX5, Second Civic type R, third 172 cup I think the 106 was fifth?

Well I was after a 106 GTi before I got my 172, & I did a lot of reading about them. A lot of people were saying in independant tests & a Top Gear review it got rated as the 2nd best handling car out of all sports cars at one time. The only thing that beat it was a Ferrari.

But anyway I thought the Saxo & 106 were basically the same car, with different shells.

Yeah they are I think the only diffrence other then the exterior/interior is that that the gearing is slightly shorter in the saxo and I think the saxo is very slightly heavier and they use diffrent ECUs as well.

I went for the saxo as I think the phase two is a great looking little car the price diffrence is quite big an I found a really good VTS. J

Be careful though - I looked at six 106 GTis on the strength of similar praise to what its getting here.

Most of them were right nails and even the perfect ones just werent my cup of tea. If youre used to control on the limit with a Williams, then youll have to re-learn your driving style. The little Pug is way more snappy and generally tail happy, as well as being less planted at high speeds.

I always make sure to test cars Im going to buy down my local B-roads, which is where youd have thought that a 106 GTi would be in its element? Well, at the time Id previously had a Clio 16V and compared to that the Pug was a lot less able to make pace because of the suspension not allowing the same speeds. Dont get me wrong, I did like it, but it made me go and look for a Williams instead.

In all seriousness, the 1.2 Dynamique I took down the same roads on a test a few weeks ago had better balanced damping than the GTis I tried down the same roads (not sure if thats because the little Clio is good or the 106 not so good??!). On the other hand, the 106 GTis were great around mini roundabouts and on smooth surfaces.

Im not quite sure comparing damping on soggy 1.2 and a hot hatch is relevant of course the damping would be better on a 1.2 its got springs of a bed!

I would still buy one, but not over certain other cars (not including a 1.2 Clio Lol!!)
