as above what causes the circlips to come loose?
ive had this problem and replaced both shafts and clip+flushed out my g/box for the bearings,
theres clunks or crunchs coming from the gearbox whilst engaged in gear and just driving itself, creating alot of vibration threw the engine and giving alot of engine movement.
this must mean that the diff or another gearbox member hasnt got much life left in it,
new box needed?

what causes the the boxes to go other than harsh changing clutch slipping etc,

what all can get done wrong whilst box and clutch getting replaced as this got done not long ago and could have a factor as to why im getting this now?wrong allignment on something?mounts incorrect?

what else can get damaged with the strain of the gearbox going and jamming the engine?

im going to be on my 3 box for this car by next week but really concerned about what other damage gets done when gearbox goes?

many many thanks

3 box's..... What on earth are you doing to them? Are you doing track days?

I did the same thing to my box but that was due to a rush of blood to the head one day when I decided to see what would happen if I changed into second with the wheels still spinning. Bad idea. Diff went. Pinion side seemed ok but the gear side kept sliding out even with new circlips, disengaging the gear and hence no drive. Saw 140MPH on the speedo in fifth while standing still. Anyway when I looked at mine it seamed wear on the gear to case surfaces allowed it to move about enough to disengage.

So for me it was a case of scrappy and “new to me” box. For yours with so much noise and shaking coming from it I’m surprised it still moves! Not even worth reconditioning I’d imagine for the price you could get a low mileage yard box for.

1….. Take the speedo drive (if you have the plastic one sticking out of the box) off the box before you kill it hitting it off the bulkhead or steering rack while manoeuvring the box out.
2….. While you’ve the box off inspect the clutch, it’s the easiest time to do it.
3….. DON’T DO WHA I DID and neglect to replace the clutch release bearing, 3000 miles later mine started squealing and off the box had to come again. PAIN IN THE PERVERBIAL.

It’s highly unlikely that the box is misaligned due to the number of bolts and dowels which mount it. I guess if someone has damaged the clutch or box drive shaft trying to mount a new box, the clutch release leaver would wiggle about so look at it with at idle. A box seizing could do all sorts of nasty things so an engine. Broken timing belt maybe? Get it sorted now, it’ll only leave you at the side of the road with a potentially large bill for parts.

yea thanks lol,
nah just that i got told and found that the circlip was common to pop but seems that its also a sign that the diffs f*cked as since it had popped its not healed yet,

my box went randomly one day whilst taking a drive but 75k on it, so got another1 put in(2nd hand)and 3 weeks of me luving the clio again(lots of blood to the head) i broke it(circlip and pasengers shaft),now got new clip and shaft in(and 20 quid of oil!) and the box is clunking as something inside is turning (jacked up with wheels off and driving itself in 1st gear).
when its driving itself its just small clunks driving itself but when i up revs a wee bity thats where im getting my vibrations and engine movement.

id say that a mount on the gearbox has gone, thats what happend to my old saxo and caused the clutch to go weird and the linkages to become loose/sloppy, id change your driving style and stop the burnouts, wheel spins, dumping the clutch at 6k as i learnt the hard way, only a saxo is much cheaper as theres 1000000s of boxes round.

Well I’m NOT a box connoisseur but I was always told the pinion side was the crown side, i.e. the big driver gear which is the driver’s side of the car on Clio's. Gear side is the smaller driven side the one the circlips are supposed to hold in.
