Forgot to say before -
The 172s you cant see their exhausts, the 182s are the ones with twin tailpipes in the centre of the bumper, cant remember if anyone else said or not.

I read somewhere the 172 cup has magic blue paint which makes them faster. When building the cars the french engineers were mesmerised by this paint to the point of distraction, which is why some cups appear less well built/ rattle more.
Cheap track toy/ purposeful b-road car, a 172 cup. More to spend and after something a bit newer, a 182 trophy. Want more or less the same but with lots of goodies inside to play with and a choice of pretty colours, at the expense of a little weight (in terms of speed you wont notice a difference on the road though), a 182 ff.

OMG! I really don't want to take sides or offend anyone but, you've got to admit.... It's nice to see people are so passionate about their cars!
At the end of the day fella, as you can see you've thrown in a bit of a verbal hand grenade by asking. In my humble and often flawed opinion, you need to go with your own feelings/ instincts or whatever you want to call it because if we all liked the same thing the world would be a boring place wouldn't it!?!

The best compromise is arguably the 182 with both cup packs. However if I was buying it would be a Trophy or a 172 Cup. Primarily because the cups are cheaper and you have less money tied up in it and the trophy because they hold their money. I don't want to start a war here but 182 prices seems to be slipping of recent times and not just on here. Please don't pay top dollar for one off a dealer, £7.5k should get you a reasonable one.

you'll be paying pretty much the same insurance for any of them. The trophy and cups are group 17 opposed to 16 iirc
Racing Blue with both cup packs is relatively rare. There are 433 RB 182's in existance, 301 of those had the cup spolier on, and 343 had the cup suspension, not sure how many had both. If you can find one with sat nav as well, that would great as there are only 6 in existance, or recaros, where there are only 3 !
A4 DTM/iceberg cup
theres plenty out there. just make sure you drive a good example of each... i was all 182 with cup packs until i drove the 172 cup.theres just something different about the way it drives. but each to their own. think about what is most important to you in the car. for me personally it was the focus on driving that i enjoy.
You gotta be tempted....sounds like good money for it! Borrow some cash to bridge over the vtr...
