what colour is this? does a lack of history put you off?

  nothing
ive spotted this clio for sale locally to me, its a x plate showing 79k it unfortunatly comes with no history further back that the present owner who has owned the car for a year, it seems straight enough and i really like the colour as ive never seen another, ive done all the basic car checks and waiting on a hpi and to get the reference number off the v5 that way i can at least conform the mileage back to when the computerised mots started

the cars £1000 its taxed and moted and comes with 2 sets of wheels the only gutting thing is neither are the oz f1's but im waiting on word back on some 16" ox f1's just now

so other than wanting to know the name of the colour id like to know if a lack of history puts people off i know its a 12 year old car but my old car was a 1997 and i have everything including the recipts from the dealers to its owners in the past

thinks like belts and mechanical work i can do so thats not an issue id do the belts etc anyway just because id prefer to be safe than sorry

Wouldnt touch one without history with a s**tty stick. It is a nice looking car but you've now idea how its been treated.

All well and good changing the belts to be on the safe side but you'll probably f**k up if you do yourself so that's gonna cost you £600.

Even then you might find that its drops valve / dephaser starts tapping / bottom end starts knocking because its not had an oil change in the last 5 years.

When you factor in a belt change you're up to £1600 which would get you a nice Ph1 with a decent history.

This.

Ph1 are old cars now, so I'd recommend buying one with a good history. Proof of belts being done by a reputable specialist is a must. Previous owner of mine even sent me a picture of my car having the belts and dephaser replaced. £1500-1700 would see you get a tidy ph1 with all the right work done.

i dont see how id mess up doing the belts myself, ive done lots and will continue to do them with no issues

i liked the car due to the colour, and it was nice and local but for the life of my i couldnt get the guy to take money off me, usual time waster on gumtree more interested in swopping then actual cash, people like that get on my tits

A lot of otherwise reputable mechanics have messed them up in the past. Having the Renault tools is the important thing, which you can pick up from someone on here. There is always a set being sold and you'll always get your money back for them.

The renault sport engines are much more of a b**ch to do than a lot of other cars + you would need all the locking and tensioning tools. I have done other cars in the past but wouldnt dream of doing my 182. Its also a very tight working area.

Im not saying you shouldnt do it yourself if your confident you can, just highlighting that its much easier to mess up than a lot of other cars. Most of us wouldnt let anyone other than a renault specailist touch that side of the engine :p

Just spotted it on Gumtree as well. Doesnt surprise me that hes a time waster, get fed up with the fuds on that site! I think its top dollar for a car without service history but if you could get a couple of hundred off then it'd be closer to being worth it imo.

People like you get on my tits - why bother asking questions like "would lack of service history put you off?" if you're going to buy it anyway?

Save yourself a load of money and effort in the long run and fork out another £500 for a decent one with history.

A large main (Ford/Kia) dealer did mine when I bought the car and made a right royal ar$e of it, needless to say I got a reputable specialist to redo the job (the dealer paid!!!).

Don't have a go yourself!

Djw John, it started off he would answer all my questions, said it had reciepts and history going back a year since he got it and that he was happpy for me to see it, he even offered to bring it to the garage so i could have a look at it on the ramp but as soon as i asked about the reference number on the v5 to check the previous computerised mots to see if the mileage ties in for the last 3_4 years that was it started messing me arround so desided to just leave it

Bennno2005 i dont like cars with no history, ive never owned one thats not had a good history it tends ot be the icing on the cake when im looking but i liked the look for the wee car and thought i could do something with it and since it was literally 2 minutes from where i stay and was a nice colour i thought id take a chance on going to see it, i dont mind doing jobs like belts, bearings, abs rings all that kinda stuff to give me some piece of mind but it was the fact its got 1 years history out of 13 years of being on the road so tohught id ask the opinion of others which has led me to look for a newer phase 2 with history and one further a field that my back door

Thats fair enough, just from you're previous post i assumed you tried to buy it after the general concencous was it was a bad idea thus defeating the object of you asking for advice in the first place.

Condition is always the most important thing but for the money it would cost you could find a decent example with history.

As I said before its not little niggles you want to be worrying about with lack of history its more the bottom end s**tting itself because its been run on oil like tar for 9 years.

You never know it could be fine but its not cheap enough to take the risk IMO.

Didn't someone on here (Daniel?) take a car in part ex the other day with little history that turned out it had been running on cooking oil instead of engine oil for the last year?

Obviously a stupid example, but this just shows how stupid some people are. The older Ph1 are often attractive to stupid people because they can be had so cheap. You might wonder why the dipstick is a bit pale, but I don't think peering down the dark oil cover at the camshafts I'd spot dirty cooking oil over dirty engine oil tbh?

i bought my 172 ph2 about 4months ago from a dealer, car dealer not dug dealer by the way,lol which was apparently a finance recall after i hpi checked it and looked over i bought it it had full mot history but no service history 71k i paid £1900 i serviced it straight away and got the cam belt changed seems spot on and im happy with it, although when i changed the spark plugs there was hardly any electrode left on them so was more like 112 than a 172, runs sweet as a nut now though.

Personally I cant see why you would spend £2500 on 172 with no history.

i paid £1900 for it, and im happy with it, ive had plenty of cars ive serviced myself and sold on without a the last 3-4 service history.
