What is this used for

Evening All,

Was looking around te engine bay today along with cleaning it up and i noticed this small black housing mounted on top of the gearbox housing on the right hand (passengers) side of the engine bay , not far from the battery.

I took the cover off and there appears to be a hole within the middle of the box, i would really like to know what it is used for, can anybody help?

its just a breather to help with condensation when the oil heats up .
