for once i used my car to try to get into work but it broke down on the way this morning, big traffic jam approaching the middle of birmingham, temp gauge went to max and the car overheated becuse the fan didnt switch on, steam was coming out of the bonnet, was just outside a petrol station so i called for help.

the recovery guy tested a few things and said it was this part that probably stopped the fan coming on, did a temp repair job to bypass it and engage the fan and filled the coolant up to get me on my way.

is this a temp sensor cus i went to renault to get a new one, but they didnt really know that much about it and the part number wasnt recognized, i got them to order one, but i havent paid for it in case its not the right thing.

so what is this thing??

It's the rheostat or resistor thingy controlling fan speed.

The one on my old Clio Rt became corroded and the interior fan wouldn't work.

It's definetly the speed control resistor for the interior fan I'm just not sure of the exact name.

yea it looks like the heater resistor pack as they call it, its in the skuttle pannel under the wipers,

this one was fitted near the radiator fan, the mechanic removed the airbox to get to it, just renault didnt know what i was talking about...which isnt unusual, but its frusutrating becuase i dont know if they've ordered me the right part, they didnt recognise the part number that was on it..

Ah actually I've just re-read the first post. I thought you meant interior fans.

It's similar though.

Sorry for the slow replay bveen a bit busy

Its the cooling fan relay/resister.

If it doesn't work fan doesn't come on.

Dead easy to change common part I'm sure with all Clios with air con.

The way to have stopped is it to drive above 108mph as the car then things its in high speed mode so stops taking reading sfrom the system. (Not sure the police would agree.

cheers edde

this part wont stop working everytime i drive faster than 108mph will it? ie, if i do 110mph then hit a traffic jam and am stationary for ages will it trigger the fan?

When your over 108mph the sensor signal is ignored so it doesn';t mtter it doesn't work drop under and the readings from it are used to turn the fan on and off.
