What Oil & where to buy from?

  A4 Avant & A3
The time has come for me to do my 6000 mile oil change.
Having never done it myself on this car (172 cup):

1.What is a good oil for normal road use & not really expensive.

2.Where is a good place to buy it from? web? or local shop (bristol)

Cheers

i used to always buy mine from Deborah at Total Butler, Elf Excellium 5w 40 but you need to buy 12 bottles.

4.5 litres elf from renault is £25... that a bargain then??? i might just do that then.
Is 4.5 litres the amount needed? or is it 5??
Suppose i need to get an oil filter from then aswell seeing as it's still under warranty?

4.75 litres without changing the oil filter , 5.1 litres if your change the oil filter . Best checking the dipstick rather than the dash lights for the level .

so 4.5 litres from renault for £25ish wouldn't be quite enough then.. god damn.

i've never just changed the oil & not the filter.. is this ok to do on a 6k mile oil change?

^ on my 1.2 its more than enough. they do sell 1L bottles, but ive never had to buy one in all honesty as i normally have some oil left over. it may be a 5l bottle, but ive not checked for a while lol

You may aswell change both to be honest, a filter will only cost you 5 quid or so...

Motor factors charge circa £6.50 for the filter, then its your call between fully or semi synthetic. I went for Semi...10w 40 £18.50 for 5 litres!!! (Morris's lubricants)

Just changed the oil from the last Renault service.

They use 10w40 semi synthetic. The Elf excellium is apparently the same as the Total Quartz oil, which you'll probably get cheaper.

I have just changed the oil and filter - 6 months since last service.

Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 fully synthetic oil with oil filter from Renault.

Very smooth, noticable difference.

Oil filter about £8 - better getting the renault one than saving a quid or two on a cheap tack one.

Try Nigel at Lubrication Limited at Leicester for some good prices on the Shell Helix Ultra - he knows his stuff too.

£ 28 for 6 litres after a bit of negotiation......he has a RS Megane 225. Gearbox oil also in stock.

total quartz £18 5 litres from GSF car parts same as elf excillium.
