truthfully mate, Halfords or tesco oil is just as goood as the CASTROL or anything branded!
Might find it a bit shocking but it is they all have codes on the back which if you ge to learn yourd under stand it.
i always use halford oil cheap cheer full my motors got 130000 on it :rasp:

i use millars fully synthetic motorsport oil in the 172, changed every 6k and always use genuine filters

even if the Halfords stuff is ok to use, for around the same price you can get a branded fully synthetic delivered to your door from www.opieoils.com.

ClioRacer18, do you know if the Chevron 5w/40 that costco sell is as good as the comma/halfords etc...
I've asked in various threads about it, but nobody replies
Thing is, it only costs about £10 per 4l, so it's a bargain if it's any good.
Dunno bud, theres codes on the back starts with letters then numbers compare it too the halfords codes. send me both ill work it out

its a high performance high reving engine, you can use cheap oil in it if you want, your car, but theres no way id be using tesco oil when hammering my cars nuts in round a track.

Sure he will, but then if you were in the business of selling oil would you want to tell people that some cheap oil from Tesco is just as good as the stuff you sell?
I'm not saying he doesn't know his stuff, but he may stretch the truth a bit.
Anyway, I went to Costco & they've stopped doing the 5W/40 atm at my local one. It was Chevron Supreme fully synth though that they had in.
They are selling Mobil One 0W/40 for about £23 per 4litres atm & Chevron 15w/40 at £22 per 20 litres
, don't think that was fully synth though.this is what i was thinkin because i do drive my car hard and dont mined paying out for "expensive" oil because at the end of the day you get what you pay for,

Well my beast has had a hard 34k in the past yr or less been running on halfords oil its spot on!! been around tracks and down strips runs perfect, was having a natter with a couple mates with there williams, ones stupidly fast always got the fastest cars or bikes on the road, but he will make them fast then faster made man, any ways i asked him seen as hes a top mechanic what he run his off, nothing but halfords or what ever cheap stuff he can get, its all about the codes on the back. not price not brand, but of course any one in the business isnt going to admit this as its such a profitable business
Halfords 5w/40 is made by Comma (owned by Exxon/Mobil) and is Comma Syner-G 5w/40 fully synth and meets ACEA A3 B3 API SL CF MB 229.1, VW 502.00/505.00, BMW Longlife 98, Porsche industry standards just like the expensive stuff.
IMO, as long as the oil meets those standards and the requirements stated in the manual for your car, I see little, if any, benefit in spending money on the more expensive branded oils, especially if the oil is changed frequently or if you're only gonna keep the car a few years. Yes, there are oils that use the more expensive PAO/Ester base stocks, but are you really going to notice the difference? Has anyone experience engine failure because they used a cheaper brand of oil even though it met the cars requirement? Anyone noticed faster 0-60 times? There are no guarentees that the expensive oils will noticeably out perform the cheaper stuff.

I read an arcticle on the fully synthetic oils & the main thing going for the real fully synth stuff was that it lasts a lot longer before breaking down, so you can maybe double the amount of mileage before you need to change it. Only thing is it cost's twice as much and then some.
