What Porter Cable?

  Clio 182 & Saxo VTR
Looking to get one, have a £200 budget for one excluding backing plates etc. Anyone recommend me a good reliable brand or any inparticular? Also, cant remember the name but theres a similar tool to the porter cable, what are the differences and which would you recommend? Im looking to basically take the swirls out of my car and obviously family and friends cars.

Cheers. :)

What about the new Meguiars G220 Dual Action Polisher?

£149.99 inc vat and comes with backing plate, wrench, hard plastic carry case and a 1yr UK warranty.

Plus you can get 7.5% cliosport discount and free delivery.

Not used the Megs one but the lack of need for the transformer makes it is a no brainer now really.

Pc 7424 would be my choice .

Yep I own a Porta Cable 7424, but if I was to buy again I would go for the Megs unit for the simply reason you get a warranty plus no need to buy any seperate equipment to get it working.

Yeah, as good as the PC is, saving 50 notes on a transformer, not having to change over a plug and import from America means that the new Megs one is the one to go for, everyone seems to think they are pretty much equivalent in terms of performance.

Give Matt a go as he has them in stock and with a decent discount as he says.

Arent there some bad points been made about the megs? Ideally id like a pc, is my budget reasonable, i dont know the first thing about price.

Not so far as I know, like what?

£200 for a PC setup is about right, although maybe a bit more including all the polishes too depending what you go for, I would recommend the Menzerna range. TBF its the only brand I have used apart from some of the 3m products at work but they are more user friendly yet seem to produce a finer finish.

Not that I'm aware, would be very interested to hear?

You are well within budget at £200. The choice is yours.

Thanks for the advice guys, it does actually look a quality peice of kit, although some of the comments like "great for newbies" puts me off a tad because i know that if theres a better product for a similar price id sooner have that. What do you think? Also, whats the difference between the PC, Rotary and this Meguiars kit?

Cheers. :)

Rotarys seem to be for people who have been doing it a while and no what they are doin, with the rotary they have a lot more power which makes them alot more dangerous in the wrong hands

Cant be that hard can it? :D

Just been reading more on DW, seems like its just as good a porter cable but without the drawbacks, heck it does what i need it to do and thats rid it of swirls and bring the paint up so ill go for it.

Cheers for the advice guys, appreciated.

The Porter Cable, UDM and the new Megs machines are all random orbital polishers, they spin and oscillate to make them less likely to do damage to the paint as if you bear down hard on them they will bog down and slow. The later two are both said to be redesigned to improve on the P.C.

A rotary as the name suggest just spins and spins, hence the chance of making a mistake. They will produce better results and get the job done quicker be it with a steeper learning curve. Getting a perfect finish with one is an art in itself, lots of people have to use the PC after doing the rotary work to fix the marks left behind.

Is this with you?? Are they still on schedule for next week? Mike

I've just got off the phone to Meguiars UK who have confirmed to me that stocks are being shipped today by air, will arrive and clear customs for Saturday, be delivered to Megs UK for Monday and shipped to dealers on the Tuesday / Wednesday.

Which means depending on what time & day they turn-up, all pre-order should be delivered by next Saturday.

Fingers crossed there are no delays in customs.
