What service do I need?

  VW Transporter
Hey people
bought a beaut 200 last year, it’d had the clutch done and is a low miler (now on 60k on a 60 plate).

probably time it was serviced. I just rechecked and looks like I have no book and receipts are light, so what do you esteemed folks reckon I should get done?

im thinking full service, oil, filters, plugs… but what about belts and stuff?

If you’ve got no record of belts being done then that plus dephaser should be high on the list.

Cheers. I reckon it’s been looked after (based on the power flex bushes, unless they were standard) but yeah, no record.

out of interest, apart from resale ability, what happens if t dephaser isn’t done? I don’t even know what it does. #rookie

Have you phoned Renault, they might have the missing service data on their computers.

I don't think a duff dephaser is going to grenade your engine, but it's a cambelt off job to fix, so if you've got the car in for a cambelt job already....

Yeah, the dealer I rang had nothing and I’ve no idea where else it might have been. But like you say if the belts are being done…

I would be going full lot on this if you have no history.
The Dephasers on the MK3 are slightly different to the MK2 Renault sports and don't go as often but I have always changed the whole lot on mine.

Instead of a normal pulley on the inlet camshaft you have a dephaser which allows the timing of the cam to be advanced/retarded depending on operating conditions. When the ecu closes a solenoid valve in the head it allows oil to flow into the dephased which iirc advances the timing 16degrees on the 172. This gives the engine the VVT.

Aux Belt Kit
Timing Belt Kit
Dephaser
Water Pump
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Pollen Filter
Spark Plugs
Fresh Oil & Fresh Coolant.

It will cost you a small fortune but its better to get it done than not IMO

… all of which I suspect will be cheaper than any job I had done on my 997. All brilliant advice thank you people!!

+1

I'll bang the drum for changing gearbox oil until I'm pushing up daisies.

SO worth doing - especially if there is no record of it being drained and swapped previously.
agreed, i had to do a shaft on my 22yr old 1.2 16v last weekend so i drained the box oil and replaced it (probably original) and it feels like its got a brand new gearbox!

I can believe it.

When I picked my 182 up from Renault back in '04 - I was actually a bit disappointed with the feedback from the gearbox. Selecting gears was never a problem, but it had the directional commitment of a spoon handle in semi-solid porridge.

When the first service came around at 12k, I requested the gearbox oil to be drained and replaced. When I got the car back, it felt like a completely new gearbox. Nothing like the enviable gearchange of the Honda CTR available at the time, but a massive improvement in how it was originally delivered to me.

Does make you wonder just how many 1*2s and other cars in general are still being driven with their original gearbox oil?

Could be wrong as it’s been a while since I’ve had a Clio but it’s 5 year intervals for timing belt.

Also get a specialist to do it instead of a regular garage unless you know someone who you can trust to do it. Nevermind see you have already put a post up 👍

And yeah times flown by.
